    AS Tried to Steal Toys

We had a 2 hour delay so I had some of my AS kids in the morning. As a 6 year old boy is getting his shoes and coat on his 10 year old brother tells me that he stuck cars in his shoes. I didn't believe him because he lies all the time, but sure enough when I told the 6 year old to take his shoes off he had a match box car in each shoe. I told him he was going to Little Sprouts (the building for kids 3yrs and under) after school and possibly all week. I hate doing that to them over there because they already have enough to handle, but he needed to know that there are consequences. I told his mom and she was POed! She said if anything like that happens again to threaten to call the cops! (Apparently 10 year old brother has been to juvey 2x!) We had no school yesterday so he wasn't here. Should I send him back over there today or wait and see how he behaves?

I wouldn't send him over to the other building and make him be their responsibility if they already have a lot on their plates.

I would however NOT allow him to play with anything unsupervised.
Definitely NOT the Matchbox cars either.

I would then make him SHOW you his pockets and shoes are empty after he is finished playing anything.

I would also have a discussion with him about honesty, lying and stealing.

Let him know that he will have to work hard to rebuild the trust you once had in him.

This is a teachable moment.....don't lose sight of that by simply pushing him off to another building.

Mom may not be handling it correctly but you can do what you can when you have him to teach him this stuff.

You may just be that one person that makes a difference in his life.

Oh, and I would NEVER agree to threaten calling the police on him.

How are children supposed to learn that when they need help that the police are good guys and will take care of them when parents keep making them out to be scary?! Ugh, that just bothers me.
