I have not had this happened to me for any extended amount of time so I'm curious as to why you would close. I have had a water main break in my area and we had no water for only a few hours so I was able to use bottled water to wash hands and flush toilets with. It got me through the day so I didn't close. I couldn't imagine being without water for more than one day though.- Flag

I called DHS to see if I there was a way I could still stay open. I am legally unlicensed and the worker I spoke with was shocked that I called! He said in all his years he hasn't had a non registered provider call to ask him if something was ok or not ok before. He complimented me multiple times and said that I should consider getting registered because they need more great providers on their team! Happy dance!! happyface love being appreciated and complimented. I'm planning on getting registered in the fall or winter once we move and set up a separate daycare area.
He said that I am able to skate by today (with extra supplies) but if it is still off tomorrow then I need to close. The reasons I have been told to close is for sanitation reasons. Things can't be properly cleaned and sanitized. Standing human waste in the toilet. Exc.
I have heard of rapidly dumping 5 gallons of water to make it flush but we don't have that much water on hand for every time we need to flush. I have never done it before so I might be wrong.- Flag

I don't think I would close, especially if it was just a short term problem, but I would be really grossed out that I couldn't wash my hands after diaper changes. Especially after those really gross diapers - which you know you would have a ton of just because you couldn't wash your hands!- Flag

This has been my week in a nut shell....Sunday, woke up and tried taking a shower and it was spitting muddy water...water break 2 blocks down :-/ no one told us and was leaving for my daughters bday party, come back home...shower is so full of mud it no longer has water coming out. Also come home to OUR main drain being clogged and everything backing up into our basement :-/ FINALLY get those fixed late Monday night (spent an entire day of daycare with every flush coming back up into my basement. I wanted to bawl!) woke up this morning...no water at all! Our pipes are now frozen. I seriously want to crawl in a hole and not come out until summer :-/- Flag

I've never had to close for water problems but I was closed for a week in July of 2012 because the derecho took out our power for 12 days. I offered to still watch the kids but their dad is home during the day so he just kept them with him. I was heating water on a campfire out back, washing my laundry in kiddie pools, doing the dishes outside, etc and he said I had enough going on without them here too.
Week before last it was -14 here with wind chills of -31. Our water froze outside on Monday night and didn't come back on until Friday afternoon! (I don't have daycare kids at the moment because their mom is on maternity leave so it didn't affect them.)
Yes, you can rapidly dump water into a toilet and it will flush. I always put it in a large bowl or bucket and dump it into the toilet bowl that way. You could also wear gloves for diaper changes.- Flag

It is -35 today with the wind chill. When I tried to use the water this morning I thought our pipes were frozen! I have never had it happen but from what I have heard it is a pain!

I wear gloves too, but after having norovirus last year (picked up from a dcb who came back way too early after having it, and making me sicker than I have ever been), I still wash my hands thoroughly after EVERY diaper change. It took me weeks to recover from that nasty virus! {{shiver}}.- Flag
