I have worked in centers for many years and I have NEVER been paid an hourly wage to attend training. It was required training so I had to do it and most times I actually had to pay for the classes myself. So if I'm understanding you guys right, then that was illegal? As in I should have been paid for my time? I have never heard of this

Yes, they should have paid you for your time and the class!

When I worked in a center, we had training classes after work. The owner would order pizza or something for dinner for everyone and would insist we all clock in and clock out. He required us to attend the classes and so we were paid.

I personally do not have any employees, but if I did, I wouldn't dream of telling them they had to pay for training that I required them to have, or that they had to do it on their own time.

If they worked in an office, the boss would not tell them they HAD to take work home and that they would not be paid for doing it.

Unfortunately, a lot of employers just expect their employees to be ignorant of wage laws.

We even required our employees to clock in for the little employee parties we would have because they could be considered meetings since management often discuss work statistics and policies.

My attorney said, it is a state by state law. In VA I do not have to pay my employees for time or cost of the classes they take, as it is required for the job, and I am an "at will" employer. If the don't want to do the training, they can quite. However, if I was not an at will employer, and my employees were on contracts that mandated a certain length of stay, I would have to pay for it. In DC, I would have to pay for all of it no matter what, but I don't have to let them take any certifications with them when they leave.

For me, there is PLENTY of time for my employees to get their 16 hours in at my house, during nap time, or even some other times during the day when all babies are sleeping and only one of us is with the preschoolers. There is almost always 2 hours of silence here. The first hour we eat, sit on our bums, and breath. The second hour we get some training done.
