How Much Of A Runny Nose....

How much of a runny nose will you put up with???? 2yo DCK just caught a cold, has slight fever 99.6 and a constant runny/faucet nose. I wipe, throw tissue away, wash hands and the nose is all the way to his lips again, if I cant get tomit fast enough, it's all over DCK arm, hand, shirt etc. My sickness policy does state child will be asked to stay home if nose is draining and I'm unable to contain a sanitary environment. So, I asked that DCK stay home. So....how much of a runny nose will you deal with?

I am the same. If I have to follow them around with a kleenex it is time for them to go home.

They have to be fever free and able to participate in activities. It is hard now dcp used to give cold meds to control symptoms and now they tell them they just have to ride it out.... Heck I was TOLD to give them to help prevent the ear ache caused by congestion but times change.
      It:: will wait

I would be inclined to say the child needs to go home.

My illness policy in regards to runny noses says something like I will send kids home or exclude them if they have common symptoms but the care they require is more than the provider is able to manage while continuing to provide a safe and sanitary environment for the other children.

In other words, if you are having to follow a child around with a tissue all day and the child isn't capable of either wiping their own nose or coming to you when it needs to be done, I would exclude.

          Ewww!

I would love to send a child home with a runny nose, but I guess I just keep wiping it and try to deal with it. I do a lot of hand washing! I guess my reason is that parents can't always take a day off whenever their child has a runny nose or every cold their child gets. If I had the child go home every time they had a runny nose, I wouldn't have any kids as parents would not appreciate me calling them and having them come get their child every time their nose ran. Kids seem to have runny noses a lot and it is just something I just deal with. If they have other symptoms with the runny nose that are not good, then I will call the parents, but just a runny nose I will just keep wiping.

That is me too. If runny nose is the only symptom, then I just deal.

You are right about parents not being able to take a day every time their child has a runny nose.

However, I am not referring to the common runny nose that occurs now and then.

I am referring to the excessive running nose that last for MORE than 5 days and gets thick, green and gross after DAYS of dealing with it.

THAT is when I consider it to be MORE work than I am able to keep up with while keeping the environment sanitary for others.

Plus, when parents DO take a day off and let their child rest, the recovery time AND spread factor is decreased by a TON so it IS worth them taking a day off.

I agree with you on if the runny nose lasts longer then 5 days, then there is more to it especially if it is the green gunk. I wish parents would be more receptive to coming and getting their child when it is like that, but it seems like parents seem to think that if they rest at daycare it should be okay and then they don't have to take time off. At least that is the way my daycare parents seem to be and I even had one Mom tell me just to let her daughter sleep all day if she wanted as she had a bad cold, fever and a green gunky runny nose because she had no more PTO time and she felt she could rest here just as good as home. I had to tell her to find someone to come get her daughter even if it was a friend or relative, but that she had to go home. The Mom made feel really guilty for calling her and having to get someone to come get her, but she knew my sick policy.
Right now all my daycare kids have got the flu, I only have 2 kids, so I have no kids today. Even the parents have gotten it, so it seems to be spreading like wildfire here in Mn.

When I get that excuse, I tell them that expecting their child to rest and recovery at daycare is the equivalent of them trying to rest/recovery in the middle of Wal-Mart.

                      Nice try, but nope.

Yes, it seems we have a bad case of something going around the state.

I have had at least one child out every day this week for either vomiting or diarrhea. All are younger than 2 years old or a brand new 2. None of my preschoolers or parents have it.

One of my DCM's works at the urgent care clinic here and she said, they have had more cases of noro virus, roto virus, strep and the actual flu than they've seen in years.

Same here! If it's clear drainage.

Yeah, pretty much the same as others. If it's turning into a health hazard with so much that it's on their clothes and such I would send home. But I usually end up wiping noses all day. If it's green and thick that's a sign of something more than your common cold. Clear runny I can handle which can be from teething as well. One DCB who just left for jr preschool was here as a drop in yesterday and was sick again! Runny nose and that icky bad breath! His sister had a raspy voice and cough. Ugh!!! That poor boy is constantly sick. Even our Ped was shocked that she put him in preschool before 2 and especially with how sick he's been over the last year. But he said I could leave business cards there if I'm looking to fill his spot! Bringing them some tomorrow!!
