    Containing My Crawler?

Dcb just started crawling/dragging himself. I have a completely open floor plan so baby gates cannot be used to separate him from the others. He pulls toys from the older kids and pulls himself up on the bigger toys. Tries to chew on the kids...etc...::
Any ideas on how to separate him but still allowing Hine space to roam?

    Superyard.

If you have a big enough space, use two if you can afford it. You can connect them together to make a BIG area for him.
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

I agree with the superyard. It's what I use to protect my 3 mo from the older children running around.

I agree with the superyard. I love it. It's great outside too with a blanket underneath.

Can it be compacted at the end of the day? I have the room for it during daycare but definitely don't want another huge thing to trip over

How many other kids do you have in care?

I have no crawlers at this time but when I do, they have full range of the house too and what I do is "train" them as to what is and isn't okay for them to climb on etc.

It requires ALOT of shadowing and continual interaction but it only takes a couple days.

Once the crawler starts to pull themselves up onto something I don't want them climbing on, I IMMEDIATLEY remove them, say "No." and place them at where they CAN climb or hang onto.

If they try to climb on others, I do the same. The older kids are "trained" to NOT touch, shove, push or wave off the baby and to call out to me if I don't see what is happening.

I then go over to the baby and remove them from the older child and again say "No" and place them in an area where they CAN climb.

It's time consuming at first but once the crawler/climber "gets it" or begins to understand "No" it becomes SUPER simply and basically non-existent as an issue.

It's VERY similar to NannyDe's "surrender to the baby" technique.

I have 4children in care right now. 6months,9months(just started crawling), and 2 2year olds. I have been working the last two weeks since he started pulling himself around, on redirecting and removing him. The older kids have caught on the alerting me if I do not see him but he hasn't figured it out yet. I move him, he goes right back. He has his own area to play in but apparently would rather be with the other kids. I will check out nanny de's link. Thanks

I do what Blackcat does but I've used superyards. I found that the colorful superyard with the music/toys attached with a little door was a disaster for me. The older toddlers were drawn to it because it was cool and they'd stand outside it and push the sides inward. Plus there wasn't much room to crawl in it.

I've also used the white plain kind and they worked better.

On this link the third row down and the second one (it is red/blue/yellow) is in my garage now ready to be thrown out.

The one directly under that (white plastic mesh looking) was okay. I'd rather just train them though.

edited to add: aacckk, the position of the pics changed when I tried the link after posting. Hope you can figure it out by my description then. Bad one is red/yellow/blue and square with toys attached, other is white plastic but looks kind of like mesh.

I added the pictures for you. I noticed they changed places too so I hope I got the right ones.

FCC with a mixed-age group is a wonderful way to teach children respect for others. This was the topic of my parent meeting last year. Parents are amazed at how each child, regardless of age, learns to respect others space and to keep everyone safe in the process.

Superyards are definitely collapseable! You just "unhook" one side (takes some strength) and then fold it in "accordian" style.

I don't contain my crawlers for the whole day or anything, but there are times when the other kids need a break/I need a break/baby needs a break. So it's good to have the yard available as a backup.

And sometimes you can put the OLDER kids in to be undisturbed ("Hey guys! You can play in here so teh baby can't get your building!") while the baby has free rein. Works best if the older kids think it's fun and they are doing something like building with blocks.

Haha, thanks. I was wondering how they got there! I don't know how to post pics. Yes, those are the correct ones.
