No Power For 7 Days! Bad Week and Of Course a DCP Is Giving Me a Problem...

We lost power last Saturday and JUST got it back yesterday. We had a generator, but we didn't get it until Tues. night and it only had 3 outlets so we camped Christmas Eve in our basement with 2 space heaters and had Christmas down there. We lost hundreds of dollars of food ( I stock up at sales for the dc), had to stay at our family member's houses, half of the family got sick...fun times, fun times...

I had to close all of last week ( I was only open 2 days, but still). I got a call from a dcp asking if she could not pay for last week since her child couldn't come. She went on and on on how her husbands place of employment lost power so he couldn't work (he works at a car dealership so I highly doubt that) and that they made him go to work Friday.....with NO pay...which I know she is lying about that, that's ILLEGAL, I'm not dumb! She then goes on to say that she had to lend money to a friend to put gas in her generator and they dumped lots of money into theirs, so she doesn't want to pay and she can't pay for the upcoming week because they don't have any money. What nerve she has to call and ask me to not pay! I have it in my policy that I have 5 paid sick/personal days and only used 2 all year. I told her I would think about it and we could maybe work something out BUT...

I thought about some of you on here and while I did kind of feel bad for this dcm, I used my backbone and told her she has to pay for last week and I have sick/personal days for a reason. I did offer for her to pay for next week on Thurs. when she got paid (I know I shouldn't have). I had to leave a message and so far she hasn't responded. I am half hoping she won't come back. This is my munchausen mom and liar mom who is all drama. I really won't be sad if she doesn't come back and now that I have had time to think, I am so angry at her. I'm not made of money, this is my business and I have rules! Like others have said, as with any other bills, they have to be paid, lenders don't care if you don't have the money or not!

On the bright side, my family was together for Christmas and we made it work! Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I'm sorry you had such a bad week. I couldn't imagine how hard not having power would be for so long, especially at Christmas.

I agree that you should stand by your contract and charge this mom.

I would just sympathize with her and say that you understand that the power outage caused issues for everyone but she still has to pay.

I know she already talked to you, but one thing I try to do is not let parents tell me so much about their personal issues. If they try, I usually cut them off and say (very sympathetically) that I am sorry they are having issues or troubles and that I really do understand because I am having troubles too but the rules are the rules and payment is still due.

Sounds like maybe if she does leave, it won't be a bad thing as she doesn't seem like a great client anyways, but I still hope she pays you and you don't get stiffed.

We had an ice storm here a few years ago and lost power...The state will not allow me to open without water or electricity...So, since that time, I have in my contract "State will not allow child care to open without water and/or electricity." I had parents ranting as well, but this was out of my control...The Health Dept was literally going around shutting restaurants and dc down in the county.

Then again, I am a business and my contract states payment is due 52 weeks a year, regardless...so they did have to pay. Funny things was, they wanted to bring their kids to me but go back home... If your contract says to charge them, charge them..YOU ARE A BUSINESS!

op if you don't already have something about this in your contract I would revise. No way should you even have to explain or use your sick personal days for Mother Nature issues.

Thanks! I am definitely not going to back down! I have a really hard time with being too nice, but not this time. I have bills too and this dcp acts like I don't. Honestly we are fine even if she didn't pay, but that's not the point and I'm not going to let her know that! I have a policy about weather in my hb, but I think I'll have to clarify it..just for her. None of my other families gave me problems, just this one dramatic dcm.

Well dcb is here and dcd dropped off. I talked to him and he said no worries, nothing could be done. I think it's just mom being dramatic and I honestly don't think dcd knows how she acts.

I lost power too for 7 days, I have a generator powerful enough for the main necessity so I could stay open...hubby said he was told there is a form you can fill out online for possible reimbursement (something like 25$ x day the power was out) but we haven't done it yet

                  sorry you had to strugle:hug:

                    Thanks you!
I'll have to check into it, I heard it was a one time credit, hopefully it's per day!
I have some friends who just got power back, it's ridiculous!

"ridiculous" is also the way those "out of town" forester left my yard...not only they cut down several large trees that did not need to be cut down, but they left 4' to 6' stumps ...who the heck cuts trees that way? Free wood anyone?::::

Too bad I didn't live closer! My dh loves to go around and get wood for our fire pit! :: We don't have many trees in our yard so we don't have that problem, but many of our neighbors have trees down.

Darn it! I was hoping my info. was wrong..
Well, on the bright side, I didn't have power for a week so at least my bill will be a little lower...

My friend still doesn't have power and she has 4 kids!

Call your homeowners insurance about reimbursing you for other things. We lost power once for a few days, and the insurance co paid us 30 a day for food, plus $$ toward the generator. It doesn't hurt to ask.
