    Wasn't Sure How to Respond

    One day during snack a 3 yo dcg, out of the blue, asked where my parents were. I told her they both died several years ago. The question caught me way off guard and there was another dcp there at the time. So I tried to stay matter of fact about it and change the subject quickly. Did I handle it alright? I'm always uncomfortable with questions such as these because I firmly believe it's the parents' place to answer them, as everyone's beliefs can be quite different.
    I found it ironic this particular little girl asked because her g'pa is one of the funeral directors that handled my dad's services. It makes me wonder if it had been talked about at home, kwim?

    I have kids ask me about my parents - especially the 4 yo's. I think most find it amusing that Mrs. K has a mommy and daddy also I think it was probably a random question and not something brought up at home. I think you handled it well, I wouldn't be worried about offending anyone.

      I also think it is a normal question and your answer was spot on. I go out my baby book and the kids thought it was funny. one thought I was not married because I do not wear a princess dress. So I showed them wedding pictures. Kids are curious it is part of life.
      It:: will wait

        Talking about death with children is difficult. My father also passed away and the DCKS will sometimes ask me questions about him because I have a lot of pictures of him around the house.

        I think you handled it really well.

          I think you handled it great. The kids ask about my parents, too. My Mom comes to visit on occasion (legal sub but works FT as a teacher) and my Dad has picked up my kids and stopped in. One day when my Mom was here, my 3.5yo dcg said "You here pick up you daughter, take her home for dinner?" ::
