It's only -17F here today and with wind chill factored in, I think it might be closer to -25F.

DH and I went to our local tree farm yesterday and spent an hour walking around in the deep snow and cold winter air trying to decide which tree we wanted.

If you dress warm, the weather is actually pretty beautiful!
NO THANK YOU! I don't like cold at all.

But I want them to be prepared that I need to do what's best to the group, not just one child!
      Dear Parents,
Remember that I *plan* to go outside EVERYDAY! Please be sure that your child has boots, snow pants, winter coat, hat and mittens. If you are afraid you will forget something you may leave a set of everything here. You may think that a day is too cold but we may get a break that we can make it out. If worse comes to worse we will go out on the patio. I don't want your child to be the one that has to go out unprepared!
      Thanks for your cooperation.

I try to go outside everyday. The kids love it. Great way to burn off energy and fill the lungs with fresh air.

but....... I decide if we are going to go out, if I feel it is too cold for my group at the time we don't go out. If I think it is too hot we don't go out. Or if we do go out we make it a quick outside time. If my kids are enthralled in some good indoor play I am not going to break that up just because it is time to go out. I just adjust the day to meet our needs. I don't use this excuse to be lazy about our day. I really tune into the kids needs as a group and individual.

Sharlan, I laughed out loud at your post because I seriously thought you were joking!! ::
You would probably die on the spot if you were part of my daycare
We go out everyday...rain, snow, sleet, and (the rare) shine. I pull the kids in a toboggan if needed and have umbrellas for everyone! In Anchorage, Alaska, the kids have recess unless it is LESS than -10 so I figure 0 or above is all good

Just curious if the opposite would be true...how hot does it get where you are?

No I was not joking. I do not like the cold and will not go outside. Most of our summer is 100* plus. I have no problem with the heat, but cannot handle the cold. There is a reason that I live in SoCal. I can see the snow up on the mountains about an hour away from us and that is just fine. That's as close as I care to get.

Um, our public school kids are outside playing right now and it's -22F right now. ACTUAL temp.

My daycare is right by one of our local elementary schools. We rarely close for bad weather here as snow, ice, sub-zero temps and all the other fun stuff winter brings is just part of living here.

As for hot....we easily get 100F and up sometimes here with LOTS of humidity so I think we get the best of both worlds.

I so agree with this. We get cold temps (sometimes sub zero, but our winters usually are 0-20*ish) and lots and lots of snow. With each passing winter I get increasingly annoyed with adults complaining about the cold, seasonal weather. I get that it is not fun to drive in but there are so many cool things to do in the winter (especially for kids). I just think that by the time one is 20-40 yrs. old they should understand the concept of "winter" and that it comes around every year!!!!
