    OT - Parent/Teacher Conference Concern

My 5 yr old DD just started kindy and last night was the parent/teacher conference. Her teacher loves her and said lots of nice things, but also mentioned that at times, my DD will "drift off" and stare through her teachers and they need to snap her out of it.

She said she was a bit concerned and asked if we noticed it at home. I have only seen her do that when she is super tired or bored. Her teacher said she didn't think it was boredom because it happened in small groups or even one on one.

She also mentioned it could be a type of seizure?!?!?

Have any of you experienced this or have any idea what it could be?

I requested that she document when this happens from now on and she agreed. Just hoping to get some insight.

    Thank you all in advance!

These are called absence seizures or petit mal seizures. I would definitely have it documented and then seek a medical professional. I have a good friend with this condition. She is well regulated with medication. She would "loose" time. She'd be driving and not know how she got there, etc.

~I've never experienced it nor do I have much experience with it, but I would probably just go ahead and make her an appointment with her doctor asap just to be on the safe side and explain to him/her the teachers concerns and what he/she said at the conference and also let the doctor know what you've experienced and perceived at home(like when you said when she's tired or bored, etc.). If the teacher is documenting it I would try to get a copy of that documentation and take it with me to the appointment. ...Sorry I can't help much, but I truly hope that everything turns out to be okay -- Please keep us updated .

Yes, we have dealt with these types of seizures if that is what is happening. Take her to the doctor and they can refer you to a neurologist.

My oldest daughter started these around the age of 6. She was on medication until she was 9. She hasn't had one since then and no meds anymore. I read somewhere that 80% of kids will outgrow these types of seizures. Also, the closer to age 4/5 they get them the more likely they are to outgrow them.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I wouldn't wait for a lot of documentation. If you are dealing with seizures they can be dangerous if she isn't medicated. As someone else said they can't remember what they are doing but may continue the action.

A neurologist can tell if there are seizures without documentation from you. Go to your doctor with what you have.

I forgot to mention that these can be diagnosed with an EEG - not fun, but not painful.

My son has had these. I understand they grow out of them. I havent seen too many in him as of late. He does this wheeze thing that has been said to be possible Tourette's now. If it's not one thing, it's another!

With my son, he'd lose 30-40 seconds of time. He doesn't always remember where he's at and to HIM it was like if something changed in the 30-40 seconds, he'd freak out. If the thing stayed the same (like once we took pics, the lights caused him to have a seizure, but because the lady remained in same position as well as so did we) it doesn't bother him, and he just never noticed any time passed and would continue doing what he was doing. He generally became immobile but not convulsing like usually associated w. seizures. He had an EEG where he was sleep=deprived and it showed nothing significant, so we were told he'd grow out of them and so far, they have lessened. GOOD LUCK very scary stuff sometimes.
