    OT -Found Bug In Food

While getting lunch ready for the dc kids, I placed some organic corn in a pyrex and was about to pop it in the microwave. At the last second, I noticed something in the bowl, pulled it out and it was a frozen caterpillar one of the kernels of corn attached to it was discolored, too. I called the store and they were very casual about it, will give me a refund, but i am getting fed up with spending extra money on organic foods (did you hear about the Plum organics recall? I had 14 of those), and not being able to trust that it's ok and edible. Would you just bring it in for a refund or make a stink about it andy contact corporate?

actually all food organic or not is allowed a certain percentage of insects. Gross but it wont hurt you just some added protein.
    It:: will wait

I'd bring it in for a refund. I wouldn't involve corporate unless it was an ongoing issue. Quite frankly corporate is going to issue an apology and probably send you some coupons. If I wanted to show my annoyance-I would stop buying that brand.

Personally, I would just expect this from organic. But I was raised on a farm... If they aren't using pesticides to kill the bugs, it's quite likely that this will happen from time to time.

The whole reason they use all the crappy chemicals in our food is to avoid pests and get better yield.

That was my first thought. No pesticides means that the bugs will still be present.

Yup, ESPECIALLY corn for some reason.

I get bugs on occasion from our farmers market box and just pick them out and wash food well. I even wash frozen foods if at all possible for this reason.

You know, I've found insects in my organic lettuce, and I wash it and don't think it"s a big deal. This thing had eyes, was thick and ate through a piece of corn in the bag. Gross! Thanks for advice though -I always value the perspectives on the forum I will just get a refund but will probably choose different corn moving forward!

Interesting! Guess I will start washing frozen stuff, too.

I would just get a refund. I remember years ago I found a HUGE grasshopper in my campbells VEGETARIAN soup. I was also pregnant, and VERY morning sick at the time. I called customer service, with some encouragement... after all... 20 years ago, there wasn't much of an internet. The guy blew me off, said no biggie, happens.

Out of curiosity I googled organic foods and bugs and was surprised at how common this really is.

One site did a good job of putting it in perspective though and said "Since bugs are natural, if they like a food then it's good. It's the foods that bugs won't eat that should concern us so bugs in the food is a good thing"

Just wash them and carry on. ::

I would take it back for a refund, but I would also contact corporate. You might get a few coupons out of it.

I contacted Del Monte this morning because the can of green beans that I opened had A LOT of chopped up stems in it. I picked out all of the stems, but we still ate the green beans.

That's the trade off, bugs or chemicals, your choice.
                          I see little people.

You inspired me to google, too and I found out they are earworms. Apparently very common in sweet corn and no big deal- learn something new each day :: The supermarket said they will likely send it in to quality control.

I have found, since becoming a mom, that I complain a lot more than I did when I was single! I love it when a company stands behind their product and issues a refund/voucher.
