I've had all 5 of my 6 out in the last two weeks

DCG1 - last Thursday - fine Wednesday then out Thurs. with head cold, no fever - now has cough - out one day and has been gone Monday/Tues (not here those days) but still has cough and sounds stuffy.
DCB1 -sent home Friday with fever, then fine all weekend, woke up Monday with cough - mom took to doctor and they said was viral. slight cough still
DCB2- left Tuesday after nap clingy - been gone two days now "not feeling well" - not sure his symptoms
DCB3- out with fever and cough this morning - wasn't here since Monday (home with dad).

new DCG that started Monday has thick runny nose but nothing else. I'm actually happy she isn't trying to wipe it so I can just do it. I'd rather have that right now then snot on everything.

It's like some have fevers and some don't, some have cough right away and some don't. It's weird and maybe they all have different things.

I only have myself and one DCG that has been fine so far. I took Airborne this morning and having been making sure everyone washes hands, etc.

Also weird I think is no one coughs at nap. Yesterday or today. Weird!

Dcm mom took him to the doctor today and it is croup. He took one dose of steroids and is also on antibiotics... mom is guessing it's because the steroids can lower the immune system.

A PP mentioned that croup is caused by the cold - it can be caused by any number of respiratory viruses.

Another PP mentioned that those who have current vaccinations against pertussis can still get it - I have also read this, but don't have time at the moment to find a source for that info.

I decided that I am not excluding him from care tomorrow even though he is starting the antibiotic. I told her to keep him home at ANY sign of a reaction or even one loose stool.

We've had a nasty virus go through, with a lingering cough (I'm on my 3rd week of the cough, losing my voice for the 2nd time!). It's tough ... but I haven't exluded anyone because of it since we ALL have it. I'm waiting for DS to end up with croup, since it seems to be about this time every year that he ends up with it ...

We had a couple of kids with pneumonia here in the past month, just came out of the blue.

I had whooping cough last year. It was HORRIBLE. I went to the doctor six times and received various antibiotics, steroids etc along with 'it's bacterial', 'it's viral' blah, blah, blah. I finally went to a different doc and he thought it was whooping cough. It started in February and finally was completely done in August....no kidding. I also had mild lung pain during that time, darting around all over the place.

Since then, got both my Pertussis booster as well as Pneumonia vaccine.

It was awful to be coughing for that long.

but....why did you get the pertussis shot? Having pertussis gives you lifelong natural immunity....

                The 100 Day Cough

I wrote about my coughing condition several weeks ago. I still have it after 20 months.

We had some of my children's friend's over the summer and they both had whooping cough. Our family seemed to come down with a cough after several days. Mine being the worse.

I've also read that China has been dealing with an epidemic of whooping cough. They call it the 100 day cough. It looks like it is making the rounds nationally.

Only 5.9% of eligible candidates receive the recommended pertussis booster vaccine, and the disease remains one of the leading causes of vaccine-preventable deaths worldwide.

From what I know neither having pertussis once nor getting a vaccine gives you immunity. Either may lower the chances that you get it but they don't guarantee it and the pertussis vaccine wears off after about 3 years.

In talking about this with my teacher last night it makes sense. California had a pertussis outbreak and like you mentioned , many of the people that got it were vaccinated. What my teacher explained is that people don't realize that the vaccine wears off and that many of the people that contracted pertussis were over the three year period (in CA anyway).
