    Sick Kid HELP!

I need some advice!! I have a small home daycare and today I just have one DCB and my own son. This morning DCM drops DCB off and says that she thinks he is getting a cold and has been sneezing all morning. He is very snotty and has been sneezing all morning and before lunch started hack coughing. I thought I would let him have lunch then put him down for his nap to see how he felt after. I just went to get him and he has diarrhea and a face full of snot. I called the mom to come pick him up but she is two hours away, the dad cannot leave work and their emerg pick up is no where to be found!!!! What do I do with a sick DCB and my own son to try and minimize the chance of myself and my son being sick! UGH so frustrating!

I require parents to pick up or have someone else pick up within 30 minutes of my call.

I would call dad at work and tell him he NEEDS to figure out someone who CAN come get the child.

I would NOT agree to just wait until mom can get there. It's the parents responsibility to have an AVAILABLE contact person for situations like this.

Dad CAN'T leave work or WON'T? Usually, it's that they don't really want too, not that they can't...kwim?

I would put the ball in their court and tell the parents to figure something out and leaving him with you is NOT an option.

      Thanks for the reply,

I called back dcd and he said he "cant" leave work which in my mind means wont.. and I will just have to take care of dcb until dcm gets here...since no one is able to pick him up I have pulled out a play pack and put some toys and blankets in there and put a movie on so I wont have to spend countless hours disinfecting my whole house..I am so mad but I suppose I will get the last laugh when I have to call in sick when me and my son get whatever it is he has..

I have had that same thing happen to me, called dcm, told her that her daughter had a temp of 102, come get her and I was told"I have no more PTO and can't come get her. I then asked if someone else, a friend or relative could come get her, was told, let me call around. One hour later she called back and said Dad would try and get off work early and come get her. He came about an hour after that, but man was I mad. To think parents can't get off to come get their sick child, there is no excuse for that. To top it off, poor little girl ended up that night with a temp of between 104-106, parents did not take her to the Dr, which I would have taken her to the emergency room as that is extremely high in my mind.

But you know what the Dr said in the phone conversation He said"We don't get concern about a temp until it reaches 107 and that is where the organs start to shut down, so don't be concerned until it gets to that 107" .

I would call DCD again and just say, you have 30 minutes to come get your child and if you are not willing to do so, Don't come back tomorrow because I will no longer provide care for your child.

So they know that he's coming down with something that morning, but have a 2 hour time frame for picking him up! I can see/ understand this happening on a random unexpected day, but it shouldn't be normal, and if you know/ suspect your son is coming down with something... you should make sure you, or someone else is available.
It sounds like today is already set, but you should talk to them about what they are going to do to make sure this doesn't happen again.

I would tell mom since she dropped him off sick, he has to remain home for 48-72 hours. Maybe a good time to revise your policies.

I require all children remain home until 24 hours after symptoms are gone. If they drop them off since and I have to call them, I require they stay home for 72 hours.

              Thanks for all the replies!

Yesterday she kept him home in the morning but said he was find so dropped him off for the afternoon. He was very nasally and she said he was not 100% (Then why infect my family) . Today is a different story, dropped him off WITH a diarrhea diaper his coat SOAKED in snot. I have zero backbone but seriously when he walked in I gagged she pretty much threw him at me and was gone so its not like she couldnt smell that.. I am now starting to not feel well and my son is now coughing... I have given my notice two weeks ago that once I find another job I will be done with this.

Since you missed the opportunity to hand him back to mom when she dropped him off (it's so gross that she handed him to you like that), I would call for an immediate pick up. I wouldn't care if she's angry, either, or is nasty to you. I would want to be done with this situation asap!

If you were going to quit anyways, I would term effective immediately! Disregard to policy and not picking up within an acceptable time frame is not acceptable and a family that respects you would not do that. Sorry you had to deal with that!
