3 year old girl with Athletes Foot?

So my 3 yr old dcg's mom told me that in the winter her feet get yucky and she gets athletes foot. (in MN btw) First of all, gross. Doesn't she bathe? My husband plays football and works out everyday and he doesn't even get it... anyway. Told girl and mom that she MUST keep socks on at all times if this is the case. Problem is, dcg HATES socks and mom is one of those who doesn't use ANY medications. Since this is considered contagious, should she even be allowed here??? And what about the fact that it is recurring? Not sure what to do if anything or how to approach this one...

I'd ask mom to get a doctors slip telling you about the problem and what you should do about it and if it is contagious.

It can be passed from foot to foot (or worse- see 'jock itch') through residual contact. Not bathing doesn't cause it- it can be contracted in the shower! It can go away on its own, but a severe case should be treated for at least a week after symptoms are gone. It is contagious.

In your sick policy, do you have anything about rashes? That would qualify as a rash. If she doesn't want to medicate, she shouldn't have her daughter come.

ALSO- whatever happens, I'd be checking this girl's feet every day after this, knowing that they don't treat it at home, it's being passed around, and she likes to be barefoot.

Getting Fungus on the foot doesnt have anything to do with being dirty its from the feet sweating in socks and shoes and causing fungus to grow some childrens skin is more senstive to things like this then others. My Son had it last year due to his feeting sweating and he DOES bath everyday and he is 10 some kids sweat more then others. Honestly wearing socks will make it worse and YES the child needs medcinie for her feet the doctor had me soak my Sons feet in water with a capfull of bleach yes I was concerned but it kills the fungus and then I had to apply the cream this was done 3 times a day and he could NOT attend school for a week due to him not needing to be in socks or shoes and yes it is HIGHLY contagious I will tell Mom ASAP that when her little girl has it she NEEDS to take her to the doctors and she will not be accepted back into daycare until it is gone due to her not being able to wear socks or shoes and tell her it she needs to wash her shoes in HOT water and also it is NOT normal for her to keep getting it over and over again. God some parents are NUTS.

My dad had this issue from years in the Navy and using community showers. I remember him using special foot fungus creme on his feet, and mine too, occasionally. His is so chronic, that he quit buying the special foot creme and started buying generic yeast infection (Miconazole) medication, which happens to work better than the foot creme and is cheaper too!

Honestly if mom isn't willing to medicate for fungus, and she won't let you apply the creme...I'd term. It's highly contagious, even thru socks. The girl would need to keep shoes on all day to keep from getting on your floors or other children.

**What I do find odd, however, is that mom said it happens only in the Winter?? It's quite possible that it's NOT fungus but really really dry feet. Usually foot fungus is more rampant in the summer.**

She said it happens in the winter because she wears boots a lot and her feet sweat more. I guess that sorta makes sense because she did wear sandals a lot this summer. Thanks everyone for all the info, this was super helpful!
