    Breast Feed Infant Help

    How much and how often should a 12 wk breast feed infant eat. Mom wants her to eat 6 oz every 4 hours I cannot get her to go that long every 2 1/2- 3 hrs she is screaming for food. Mom said she believes baby has colic I think baby screams because she is hungry. Any help would be great.

    My experience is that breast fed infants are to be fed ON DEMAND. And I make it clear to moms that I do exactly that. If they refuse to bring enough milk I will call them for pick up.

    Now with formula fed babies, I'm different. If a formula fed baby is demanding every two hour bottles, something is going on and I take that up with the parents. Even pediatricians do not recommend formula feeding huge bottles every two hours.

    But breast fed babies should always be on demand because bm breaks down quicker.

      my daughter nursed anywhere from every 2 to 4 hours, during a growth spurt she might snack (an ounce or so every hour)

        6 oz at 12 wks is a lot!!! I'm sure she doesn't eat that much at the breast in one feeding only every 4 hours at home.

        I would try to just feed around 4 oz. whenever she wants it and just tell the mom what she wants to hear. As long as she's eating an appropriate # of ounces who cares at what specific time it happened? This is one of my "smile and nod" circumstances.

        If it isn't working and the baby is hungry, I guess it would be time to talk to mom. Sympathize with the complexities of working and breastfeeding, but that this is what HAS TO happen at group care.

        Good luck!

          I am required by my state's licensing rules to feed ALL infants on demand. The parents' wishes do not matter, it is what I am required to do, and what I feel is the right thing to do. Perhaps you can tell Mom that you MUST feed the child on demand, but will TRY to accommodate her wishes.

            I am having this same issue right now with one of my dc babies. I had to call dcm to pick her up early because she was not going to make it to 5pm.

            I'm wondering if the babies are tired when we think they are hungry, because this morning I put dc baby down for a nap instead of feeding her and shes been sleeping for 30 minutes.

            Oh wait that's her screaming!!!::

                infants are to be fed on demand. I tell parents that I don't do extreme feedings.
