    Ear Tube Surgery

So. Dcb got much needed tubes in his ears today. Dcm said she'd text me by this afternoon to let me know how he's doing and whether he'll be in tomorrow since he might also be getting his adenoids out. Well fast forward to now when I got a text from her saying the dr just cleared him for daycare tomorrow provided that I give him only soft foods and a constant dose of ibuprofen. Is this normal for ear tubes? I know they are up and good to go pretty quickly but never heard of the soft foods requirement unless he had his adenoids out (she avoided mentioning that) and needing a constant dose of ibuprofen worries me that he is in no mood for daycare tomorrow.

I guess we'll see since I told her she could try it but I will send him home if he is too crabby or starts fever or vomiting...and there will be no refund in that case.

I don't know why he would have to have those things. My daughter had both out and she was cleared to eat regular. No soft foods.

I bet he had his tonsils removed!!!! That's common with adenods and tubes. If that's the case no!! I would not provide care for a few days.

Yeah I'm thinking there's more to the story since my friend's ds went through the same thing and he couldn't eat normally for a few days...

My daughter had tubes alone e first time and she had a few doses of ibuprofen afterwards.

Then she had another set of tubes and a t&a done and had liquid narcotic medication and had to do soft foods for two weeks. She took a week to get back to some semblance of normal after that one.

Wow. I've never heard of soft foods after any.of those procedures. My dd had liquid narcotics also. I guess it depends on the doc?

We are only allowed to give one dose of meds here. This is special, no special here.

I'm a total worrier when it comes to meds so no dcks can be here if they are on pain/fever reducers for any reason. I just see it as a liability... Besides, poor kid deserves an extra day home with the 'rents.

My policy is they are out for a min of 24 hours after going under-
I ibuprofen indicates pain- pain indicates a sick kid who should be home.
I have had two of my own have tubes - no pain meds and there would be no reason for soft food- must be adenoids- both were required when my dd had her's out

The thing is, I'd be pretty upset if he did have his adenoids out and she didn't tell me...I've seen a child after that and he was crabby, refused to swallow, and just blah. Every kid is different and handles pain differently. However, if he is anything like that he is going home pain meds or not and I told her that...but she told me he would be out for the rest of the week if he got his adenoids out. The fact that she is skipping around what exactly is going on suddenly is odd. It's good to hear that it doesn't just raise concerns with me. Plus, I suddenly had to change my menu as of 8pm tonight to "squishy things and liquids only" (and he refuses to eat as it is) when she was supposed to tell me at 8am if he had his adenoids out let alone if he would be coming by this afternoon.

I agree, the dishonesty part would bother me the most also. And dishonesty from parents in general is my biggest pet peeve.

Amen!! Not to mention it is a safety concern!! I don't think that parents don't get it still is surgery! And esp with adenoids who ever is caring for him needs to know to keep an eye on things!
A friend of mines daughter had complications and they were scary and life threatening-

Yeah mine too. It's amazing how much more willing I am to deal with a snotty nose when a parent is honest about it being a cold rather than trying to call it "allergies"...

I finally got a straight answer when I asked her point blank. He did get his adenoids out. I asked her if he's been on ibuprofen and she said no. So then I asked if he had any pain meds and she said yes. So far he seems normal...so I'll give him a chance...

So you had to drag it out No to Ibuprophen but she gave Tylenol when asked.. what the heck is the big difference. Both are keeping pain and fever down. I hope you made her bring the special diet.... by the way usually the child needs to also stay quiet for a few days after tonsils and adenoids... so no running.
                          It:: will wait

                            So to sum this up:

-she didn't and had no plans to disclose that the child had more than just tube surgery yesterday
-surgery that directly involved his airway
-he's on an undisclosed pain medication
-stronger than OTC pain medication he's likely never been on before
-meds you cannot continue to give as directed in your care

And you took him today why??!!!

Not trying to be rude in my bluntness but holy buckets, none of the above would EVER fly with me!!!!!

Would be one thing if mom had been honest and open from the get go but she wasn't, and continued on with murky clarity. Not only would I not have accepted her today had she shown up at my door but she'd be lucky if she still had a spot at all as I likely would have termed effective immediately. Withholding information about a child having surgery (I don't give a rip how minor) and being on more than just OTC pain medication is just SICK.

This family honestly has always done things "on the fly", which has resulted in me reminding them on policy multiple times. I gave in this time though since she had a dr note saying dcb is "cleared for normal daycare activities."

As far as I know, he has only been on acetaminophen. I have decided that if he needs ibuprofen today then he needs to go home. But you are right, she was supposed to tell me he had his adenoids out via text yesterday and she never did.

She is always one to wait to text me important info at the last minute (i.e, needing an early drop off or late pick up...texted that at 10pm once so now I have a list of late drop offs from her up until December) so I guess I just didn't think about how upset I should be that she dropped the ball and didn't tell me until I asked her this morning. Honestly, I was blindsided and so let it go due to the dr note and dcb acting normal. Lesson learned...
