    Would You Mention...

Would you mention to a parent that they should dress their child in clothes that fit better? Dcg comes almost everyday in pants that are too big. They fall off all the time and drag on the floor or get wet outside. Dcps are well off. They can easily afford clothes that fit. Im tired of pulling her pants up all day or folding up her cuffs.

Incidentally, dcm also didnt bring dcg a coat or shoes today. Dcg is 18 mos old. She said she dcg complained about them

I would just take them off shortly before pick up and make sure they are still off when someone comes to pick up. I would hope they would ask why and you could then tell them they kept falling down!

If clothing is a potential safety risk (kid can't see, trips over too long pants etc) then I would absolutely address it.

I understand that kids grow super fast and clothing isn't always going to be a perfect fit but there are certain types of clothing that make that issue easier.

Cuffs that can be rolled up (and stay rolled up)
Pants with elastic waistbands and/or bottoms
stretchy pants that aren't loose and hanging

I have one that I gave up on saying anything.

The child has clothing from sizes from 18 mos to size 4. Yesterday, she had on short shorts, a sleeveless t, socks (no shoes), and a SKI JACKET.

I keep extra clothes in case we have to go somewhere and I want her to look cute.

this would fall under safety risk for me too.

          here is what I have:

Do to the nature of our activities; please send your child in clothes that are comfortable, free of complicated fastening, and able to get dirty.
          • Use clothing that fit and does not interrupt their ability to participate in activities. (pants must not be falling off or so long that a child can trip)
          • Shorts or bloomers must be worn under dresses at all times.
          • No one piece suits, overhauls, or clothing with excessive snaps.
          • At no time will hair ties, bobby pins, hair clips, and etc, be permitted into daycare.
          • Due the danger of entanglement from drawstring, any clothing with drawstring will be prohibited in daycare.
Shoes should be comfortable and provide adequate protection for the feet during outdoor play. Flip-flops, slip-on shoes, shoes that are too big and open-toed sandals are prohibited as they present a safety hazard. Shoes that tie; are usually shoes that get tied in knots. Please provide shoes for your child that they can manage independently or with minimal help. Our ultimate goal is to help your child to become self sufficient. Providing them with shoes that they can manage on their own, will help set them up for success.

It bothers me to see parents dressing their children in clothes that don't fit and to me sending them without a coat or shoes is not acceptable at all.

I let parents know that shoes and coat are mandatory for emergency purposes and that their clothes must fit. I keep spare clothes for each child here and change them if their clothes do not fit, letting the parents know now to send them in clothes that don't fit.

I also don't like it when girls come with really messy hair. IMHO parents wouldn't walk out of the house with messy hair and ill fitting clothes so they shouldn't be sending their child anywhere like that either.

It is sad to me to see some parents showing such a lack of respect for their child.

I am having this problem with several of my kids recently also. I think the parents bought fall clothes but bought them big enough to last clear until spring.
Half my kids are walking around with their waistbands folded over in hopes that their pants will stay up and their sleeves rolled up too.

One dcb was running outside yesterday and his pants fell to his ankles! LOL

ugh. i have had this issue too. its weird to me because all the parents i work for are two income homes, middle to upper middle class. the parents all dress appropriately for the day and for the weather. i dont get? i mostly have the opposite issue. moms trying to squish their huge four year old into 18 month clothes. its ridiculous! i dont get it at all. they put these clothes on, how can they not notice the marks on the bodies, the crying when you have to yank a tiny shirt off, etc?

Being that my 18 month old came in pants too big today (Mom mentioned his pants being big ... tried to roll them up), he's always wearing hand me downs from his older brother, but the hand me downs are 4T and up!?

He decided at nap while his pants had already fallen down that it would be a perfect time to take his diaper off while full of poop. I will be having a conversation with DCM tonight for pick-up. Hopefully you can have discussion before you encounter a safety (or gross) issue.

The high today was 45!!! 45 degrees outside and I have 4 yr olds that go to half day preschool coming over in lightweight hoodie jackets!!!!! We spend our afternoons outside, they are WAY to crazy To be inside after school. And the mom picks them up and I told her the teacher asked for coats and hats tomorrow thinking I can put the blame on someone she'll actually listen to.
All while I have my kids and the rest of the dck's (who came prepared) in hats, coats and gloves!!!

I would mention it in a casual way. "Wow, little one had a hard time playing today! Her pants kept falling down and she was falling over the cuffs."

If they don't catch on, I would mention it again in a pushier way. "I understand that some of her fall clothes are a little too big. If you could send a pair of sweat pants for her to keep here, I would be happy to change her into them in order to keep her safe while here. I will put her new larger clothes on her when she leaves."

As far as shoes and coat, if they showed up without them, I would not allow her to stay. "Starting tomorrow, shoes and coats are mandatory. If you can't get her to put them on, just bring them with her so that I can have them here." I have one that almost always comes barefoot, as the mom allows her to. Mom brings shoes and as soon as she comes in the door, I tell her to put on her shoes and she does. She is under 2.

I always try to make it sound like it is for the child's safety.
