3y Old Development and Potty Training Questions

I have a DCB that just turned three 9/1 and was in a preschool but had to leave because they said he wasn't ready - was having lots of accidents. DCM contacted me and I enrolled him middle of September.

He told me he had to go potty twice the first day but then since then he never tells me. I mean, hasn't even one time since. I've also noticed he needs help with his pants getting them on/off, help with washing his hands. After a month and 1/2 he still will just stand at the sink not knowing what to do if I tell him to wash his hands. I also have noticed I can't understand him most of the time, he doesn't know his name when I ask him and he still is playing along side other kids, never with them. He doesn't participate in circle time either, just sits there.

How long do I wait to bring up the lack of speech to parents? He is shy as well so I had been waiting to see if that was it. Or do I not bring it up until he is 3.5y giving him more time? He is the youngest and has older siblings that maybe talk for him?

Also, they said he has really fallen behind on using the potty at home too so I asked if he had been potty trained long and found out it was just a week or two before preschool started. I think from my end I will keep working on hand washing and doing his pants so he can do those himself. Does anyone have some advice for potty training a child with speech delay?

Does your State have an inclusion coordinator who can come out and evaluate him in your care?
    - Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.

If you feel concern about his milestones, I would voice those. I certainly would not "diagnose" him but I would write up what you are and are not seeing (so they can provide that to the doctor or evaluation) and then provide info regarding early intervention programs in your area. Don't be shy in saying "I am not trained in evaluating, but I do know kids and I do have some concerns with what I am seeing from Aiden. Here is what I was concerned about.....what are your thoughts? Have you considered having him evaluated? As you look over this info that I am providing, what are your thoughts?"

Yes, I would talk to mom or dad or both and see if THEY have concerns. If they do, then I would do a referral to EI if you can do that there. I can and have done it with a few daycare children. My special dcg, none of her barrage of specialists ever referred her for ei. She's been on a waiting list for OT for six months. She can't get in a feeding clinic because of ei. S I mentioned to mom months ago about having one of the dr refer her. After months of waiting, I called ei and got e papers and did it myself.

She's had her assessment and waiting to start services now. She SHOULD have been referred at birth pretty much and now she's about to be 2. It's sad to think where she COULD Be DEVELOPMENTALLY if they hadn't dropped the ball. Earlier intervention really is better.

So, I'd scope out the parents. If they are willing, I'd get the dck referred. I'd also prepare an assessment of what is happening there so the professionals can see your observations and go from there.
