    Immunization Problem

One of my parents does not immunize her son. This is his last year here as he will be starting kindergarten next year.

Three of my mom's are pregnant. One just gave birth last week. Her child will be starting here in about seven weeks. Her doctor gave her a serious warning about the un-immunized child placing her baby in serious risk. Apparently there have been cases of disease such as measles but most immunizations cover folks...and we are what is keeping the un-immunized from getting ill. So now all my PG moms are concerned obviously.

Has anyone else had to deal with this?

I have several non-vaxed kids in care.

I'm wondering how these other mom's know that you have an un-vaxed kid in care?

I am not allowed to share that info as it is considered confidential.

I have had mom's concerned (without knowing about anyone else) but I guess since it's their concern, I let them figure out how they are going to deal with it.

I wish I had better advice but I don't know what I would do.

Its a violation of privacy to tell one mom who is or is not immunized. The non-im mom has the right to make her decision.

My licensor requires that if we have a non-vaxed child in our care that we notify all parents with children under 12 months of age. We of course cannot tell them who the child is, but we are required to let them know.

Really? Wow... I am surprised. I thought it was an issue of confidentiality when it came to medical things like that. ????

I suppose though if someone feels the infant or person with a weakened immune system can catch something from a non-vaxed kid, then it makes sense.

I am just glad I don't have to say anything to anyone about any of. With so many families against vaccinating now, the rules/laws are going to get trickier....

All I have to do is send out a notice to all parents with children under 12 months saying "hey, I have a child in my care that is not vaccinated." and I'm pretty sure that's it.

They could figure out which child I'm sure, though.

I understand the moms concern, but the baby can be exposed to non vaxed kids and adults in Walmart, in the dr office, at the store, ANYWHERE.

At least she should feel better knowing you hand wash. The people in the store, dr office etc may not.

Maybe explain to mom that the baby is actually less at risk there than at the dr office for a well baby visit. They can catch the flu, RSV and all kinds of serious issues just in a dr office.

I personally would not take any un-vaxed kids because of the risks. It's seriously a bad idea not to vax your child.

In my state we have to inform each child's parent if we have a child that is not vaccinated.

I am baffled that your state thinks it's ok !

And this is the reason why we have an epidemic of MMR and whooping cough.

I personally have no problem with unvaxed kids but its illegal here. All daycare, preschool, and school age kids have to be vaccinated. There is a loophole for homeschooled kids though.

My daughter is allergic to MMR and when she started school, the person in charge of the state health department drove down and personally did a titer test to be sure my daughter had antibodies against MMR and she did. So they signed off in her for a permanent exception for the MMR.

But personally, I think kids are way OVER vaxed and the additives and preservatives are dangerous. However, having epidemics of diseases wouldn't be a good thing either.

Like I said, I would never take a child in care that has not been vaccinated. If I were the new mom I would not enroll my child at a daycare that has un-vaccinated children. You may have to end up choosing who to take.

I do agree! I am so happy that they did this for you! I think there is a happy medium. Maybe not get all vaccinations?

Yes, but unfortunately there no option to pick or choose right now.

I personally think after you've had ONE round of each as an infant, they should do titers and if you have enough antibodies, they shouldn't make your child get more.

I did refuse the rotavirus oral vaccine when my son was little also. But it's not required here.
