I don't use bleach at all. I won't even allow bleach in my house. YUCK.

I would not be in business if I wasn't allowed a special circumstance on the bleach. It causes me and my daughter to have an asthma attack.

Just adding, I think a lot of it has to do with one's immune system.

During this time of year I serve a lot of vitamin C. I give the children a full glass of orange juice every morning and give them oranges, etc.

In the old days the pediatrician used to tell us to give our babies vitamins. It was this nasty smelling stuff called PolyViSol (I think). My daughter says her pediatrician never told her about vitamins at all to give my grandson as a baby.

I also had a doctor once that told me getting a little sick is good because it builds up immunities.

I also had a flu shot.

      I don't use bleach either.

We have some sickness but less than my two provider friends here report. I always swear that it is the orange juice but really don't know.

My state requires bleach when cleaning.

Its not a matter of cleaning the surroundings. Its a matter of having a child cough and sneeze each others face. I would be saying "its not a matter of whether my house is clean or not, its a matter of people dropping their sick children off when they should be keeping them home." That is that.

I agree with those who say cleaning is what is making kids sick. And it is. I can't remember the last time my own kids were sick. Also, its so rare that dck's are sick here too. I do find that when they are sick its coming from home.

first, please change your furnace filters. I have one mom who keeps her dog locked where the furnace is and can't figure out why they are always sick. I guess the dog hair that is stuck to the filter has nothing to do with it.

second, open windows. I can't believe how many people lock themselves up tight.

dressing for the weather. That means when its cold outside, how about making your child wear a coat and socks, common sense.

also eating healthy, I think thats why my kids don't get sick, they eat enough strawberries and pomagranet to feed 100 children.

checking for mold. also, the said mom above will leave wet clothes in the washer for a couple of days, and we all know that the smell of mildew will set in, and imagine then, children are constantly breathing it in

I NEVER EVER bleach anything in my house. I do shampoo the rugs and when I see something dirty but i dont wash and go crazy to me its pointless and a waste of time. Because most times the germs come from home not from my house.

I agree with the others who are saying it isn't a cleanliness issue - it's an issue of human contact.

              a) I hardly ever clean toys... I hardly ever have sick kids. When my kids do get sick, it's usually the sniffles for a day or two, or a 24 bug that causes vomit/diarrhea.

              b) I don't take a sick kid who cannot blow/wipe his own nose and gets snot everywhere, or a child who cannot cover their mouth/nose when sneezing/coughing.

These two things combined have really helped me cut down on illness.

When I used to sanitize toys on a regular basis my kids were MUCH sicker, MUCH more often!

I'm another one who rarely cleans toys and never bleaches and I hardly ever have sick kids. Like Missmuffet, if they do get sick it's a mild cold or short little bug.

Last year we did have a nasty bout of the flu go through (it was that one that included pink eye for a lot of people). I think I did do a thorough cleaning of every single toy after that one was over. But not bleach. I soaked 'em in a vinegar + water solution.

No more illness here since then except mild things. If someone does get sick, it's usually just one. I can't remember the last time I sent someone home sick. I had one little boy a couple weeks ago with a fever that was hovering just under the exclusion limit, but it never got worse and no one else really got that whatever-it-was.

I don't know how to bold but B would be heaven!!! If I didn't take the little ones with cold symptoms I'd be out of business! But it makes me happyface to think about it! ::

Am I the only one who would be seriously offended if someone criticized my home as "unclean" to the point that it's making children ill????

If a parent came at me like that I'd tell them they probably shouldn't bring their children anymore seeing as my home is obviously such a hazard to their health....

My state requires that I use a bleach & water solution for sanitizing toys, changing tables and bathrooms - so that's what I do. But most of my actual cleaning is done with hot water and vinegar.

I am one who doesn't go nutty cleaning when illness hits the dc. I do, however, get more firm about the kids and their hand washing. Not surprisingly the kids in my care who seem to get ill the most are the ones who "forget" about hand washing (and then lie when I ask if they did it) or don't do it appropriately (and then lie about that )

I don't think this parent realizes it has nothing to do with cleanliness.

I'd be super offended by that too....btw

As far as the parent wanting to argue policies, I'd tell her that her child is being excluded for a fever and that if she is unhappy with the licensing laws for exclusion, she is welcome to take it up with those people who write the policies. If she can get them to change them....great! Problem solved.

the next day I started to get a sore throat and got really sick the day after that
germs are spread through casual contact
hand washing and cleaning are good and we do it all day too but I am down to 4 today when I usually have 10
I personally would have gone and gargled with vinegar or salt water and rinsed nose with saline. I do this every evening after kids leave during cold season and during the day if need be. You can wash the germs out. I also drink emergen C every day and during times I have ones with colds twice a day.

Even more crucial than vitamin C...

For those trying to avoid getting sick, ample amounts of Vit D and Vit Bcomplex are excellent immune boosters. Take a good vitamin D supplement especially during the winter months if you live in most of the US. MUCH of the US population is severely VitD deficient.

A B-complex (especially one that is sublingual) is fantastic too. And some research suggests that ample amounts of B help stave off PMS symptoms too, fyi.

If you feel a cold or something coming on, and you don't think it's too weird, I swear by oil pulling. Sounds weird, but I use coconut oil and have knocked out more than a few nasty things by oil pulling just once when I recognize that I'm starting to get sick. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_pulling , http://oilpulling.com/)
