    Was I Wrong?

So all the kids are being dropped off this morning and I'm busy getting breakfast on the table and getting the kids ready to eat when I hear a noise and my dd saying "dcb did it!" I look and there was vomit on the floor (not too much, just a little that resembled applesauce). I check his mouth to see if it was in fact him (both dcb and my dd were sitting in front of it) and sure enough he had some dribble of it on his chin. I wash him up and clean and sanitize the floor and text the parents to pick up. I also checked his temperature and it was normal. He seemed to be acting normal but he had only been there for 10-15 minutes so it's not like I had much of a chance to get a good feeling for his demeanor.

Dcm comes right away to pick him up and says he gets acid reflux and sometimes vomits. He had apple juice this morning and that was the likely culprit. I have a good feeling she is correct, but I am not entirely sure he is not contagious. Plus dcb is jumping out of his chair to go home (we were eating when she got here....he was eating normal), so I would hate to say "sorry dcb, you're not going home because I think you're fine." Dcb will be 2 in December so it's not like your normal "acid reflux" age in babies. I asked dcm when the last time he vomited and she said it's been a few months, but her doctor said it would still happen.

He ended up going home with dcm but I am unsure if I made the right choice to send him home. Things with this family have been rocky lately and I feel like I just gave them a bunch of ammo to use against me.

What would you all do in this situation?

I still would have sent him home. You are protecting the GROUP and you have NO proof that he doesn't have something.

If you had experienced these random episodes before, I would consider past behavior but since you haven't you can only go on what facts you DO know.

If it makes the mom feel better, why not text or e-mail her and explain that you HAVE to err on the side of caution for the above reasons....

(((hugs)))) you are probably feeling like you may not have made the right choice BECAUSE things are rocky with this family but take the emotion out of this and use the facts alone applied to your policies.

It's ok to feel bad still.

I've had kids that vomit just because of the car ride so if that happen to me I would text mom right away, but keep the child to further observe

I have a kid with gag....

I required a doc note. I allow two vomits in a day and then after that they go home.

this kid does it at least 3 times a week. Hardly ever more than once in a day.

This mom also buys me carpet cleaner and even gave me a groupon for a free carpet cleaning that she paid for. My whole house is carpet.

BUT I think you did the right thing. YOu have to exclude for the symptoms.......

I would have sent him home, too. Whenever these is any doubt, I call the parent to pick up. It could be reflux or it could be he's coming down with a bug. If it were me, I'd rather have the parent keep an eye on him at home for 24 hours rather than risk haiving a stomach virus go through the entire group of kids.

I probably would have waited to assess him a bit further. I just had a little one (just turned 3) do this earlier this week. Just a little throw up came out and she had no other symptoms and acted just fine. I waited to see how she was doing. No other problems and she didnt get sick.

BUT you just never know. I do not think you were wrong for calling dcm to pick up, but if things are rocky you might have aggravated it a bit more. I wouldn't worry much about it. We all have to make decisions like that and we just don't know the outcome.

                  You did the right thing!

Did she happen to mention the reflux prior to today? Lesson for her - that info might have helped you make your decision.

Yeah I had a little guy with diarrhea and I sent him home after 3 times in 90min. Well he didn't go potty again at all that day and I felt bad sending him home when he was probably fine. I told mom he could return the next day if he didn't have any more diarrhea that day. I got a text at 6:30 that he wouldn't be coming, had a fever all night and more diarrhea in the morning. Sooooo I didn't feel so bad after all sending him home! LOL

No she did not. If she had I probably would have been more hesitant to have her pick him up.

I texted her later and asked how he was doing. Apparently he is doing perfectly fine. I told her that in the future if something similar happens (small amount of vomit with no other symptoms after consuming something acidic), I will text her immediately but monitor him. If it happens a second time that same day, I will have her pick him up. I then asked if she thought that was fair. I told her that I always err on the side of caution and at the time I was not aware of his past problems with reflux, hence the text to pick him up immediately.

She responded that she totally understands and is not upset at all about it. She seems to be enjoying her time with him. Hopefully that is truly the case.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, even if you thought I was being unreasonable haha ::. I have to come on here to get advice because my first person to talk to (besides my dh) is my mom. Sometimes her advice is a little old fashioned. Her advice today? That I should keep all kids when they are ill because children are sick all the time and she would feel bad that parents have to call out of work. This obviously excludes major illnesses in her opinion, but includes fevers, diarrhea, small amount of vomit, etc. .
