New DCK Allergic To My Cat!

So, we are having to wait to put our house on the market until January because we need some foundation repair. (that's the good ol gulf coast for you) So I took in a pair of sisters.

One is 3, the other is 1. I meet with their mom, gave her my handbook and contract and she signed her girls up. This was a couple of weeks ago.

First day today. She drops off this morning and notices one of my cats that walks up to her. She says "oh, you have a cat! Dcg is a little allergic to them, but she will be fine as long as she doesn't touch them."

Okay..i lock the cats upstairs and she did not touch them. At nap time, dcg did not bring her own pillow so I gave her one of ours to use. Big mistake. Her eyes got puffy and her noise started running. I called her Dad since he was picking up soon anyway and he came right away. He said he would send her own pillow tomorrow.

Mom calls angry that she had a reaction. I told her that she didn't touch the cats, she had a reaction from the pillow the cat must have been on at some point. I also told her that the cats were here when she interviewed and its in my handbook that we have two cats. She wants to bring the girls only on a drop in basis until she can get it straightened out with dcgs doctor.

How about no??!! I don't know if anything can be done to prevent her having a reaction but its not a risk i'm willing to take! Obviously her allergy is worse than Mom let on.

    Am I over reacting?

I'd wait to see what the doctor says. Me and my daughter are both SERIOUSLY allergic to cats as is one daycare kid.

We all manage to do just fine and I have multiple cats and we all sleep with them, play with them etc.

Puffy eyes and runny nose is the typical allergy. Unless she has a history of something more serious than that, I would just await the dr. Advice on the subject.

However, if dr says she can't be around cats, she can out in her two week notice. You keep deposit because she knew about the cats from the beginning.

Do you take something? I am SERIOUSLY allegic to dogs and I can't be around the following breeds(that I know of) Irish Setter, English setter, Labs, and Golden Retrievers. I feel like I have an elephant sitting on my chest if I am near them or in a space they occupy that is closed in. It stinks! I love dogs but, can not be over my brothers, parents, sister in laws, etc! My little one breaks out in hives when they lick him so I am worried he will get the same crappy allergy! Hoping he outgrows it even though I didn't and mine started with the saliva hives too. It got so much worse the last 10 years.

Thank you for your response! Do you take anything to manage the allergy?

I'm just super nervous about her coming back at all because she didn't even have direct contact with the cat and she had a reaction. And Mom called mad at ME about the reaction, how was I supposed to prevent it?

Me and the kids take an allergy pill and I use allergy shampoo on the cats. There are TWO things that cause allergies with cats.... Dander and saliva of the cat. The shampoo helps the dander and the medicine helps if its saliva. Call your vet about the shampoo and your doc about the allergy. We use allerpet shampoo. Zyrtec works great for animal allergies!! We also take allergena and its for cats and dog allergies!!

Here's a link showing both products.

Search the world's information, including webpages, images, videos and more. Google has many special features to help you find exactly what you're looking for.

We take Zyrtec for every day allergies and also use the allergena in pill form and e allerpet shampoo in the above links.

There are other products but these work the best!

You don't have to have DIRECT contact to have the exact same reaction. Mom may not have known better. The dander from the cat was just on the pillow and actually it's typical to have an even more severe reaction to sleeping on a pillow that's contaminated than actually touching the cat.

We use to have allergies to cat hair. We changed the cat's diet to raw food and no on even knows we have cats now unless you see them. Big welcome change but it is more costly.

Really? That is interesting! What sort of raw food do you feed them?

I wish we could do that. But we have too many and we'd go broke .

My daughter and I take meds but the daycare kid doesn't have to. His are milder than ours I guess.

The allerpet shampoo made a huge difference and honestly since we have such bad allergies to everything, we may be fine without e Zyrtec for the cats... It's hard to tell if its leftover cat allergy from the allerpet shampoo or if its from one of the other many things we react to here in the woods

How often do you shampoo the cats?

Once a week! At first, I thought one particular cat was going to give me some serious problems, but it's been fine. And of course, the newer kittens were exposed to baths from week one... Now I have problems keeping them OUT of my own bath!!
