    Tell Me Please

    Exactly why are we encouraged to include dcks with food prep??? We had the oatmeal raisin cookies all set to put on the cookie sheets and wham....in a millisecond someone sneezed. And of course it's not one who always remembers the ole sneeze in the elbow trick!

    Yucky! ::

    This is the same reason I don't care to serve family style unless I have room to set the food off to the side of where they are eating - much too much sneezing and coughing.

      If we serve food family style, nothing is allowed to go back to the fridge. Whatever doesn't get eaten has to be tossed out.

        Really?! I can refridge it, IF it remains in the family style bowl. I obviously can't if it was on their plate. I would never serve family style then. It wouldn't save me anything.

          When I do cook with the kids, they each prep their own, labeled, then cooked. This usually goes home with them and we eat what I prepped. So if it is cookies I label the parchment for each. Apple pies, individual pans.. etc.

            Studies show that if kids are involved in the food preparations, they are more apt to try/eat things.

            Meals here are mainly family style. I have fantastic eaters....thankfully.

              Eeeww::.

              What I have done before is make it up beforehand, but then make a "small" batch with the kiddos. That way, if anything happens, I still have some made and can toss the others. Also, we like to make monster cookies, but it makes a lot. They always loose interest after putting on the first cookie sheet.

                Because the people doing the encouraging aren't the same people who actually work with the kids.

                  Helping with food prep is also a good learning activity. Promotes math, taking turns, listening, waiting, fine motor, social skills. I usually keep it limited to making playdoh or a special recipe we are sending home for holiday gifts. (It takes a lot of patience) I would also not do it when I had a group with colds, like today, I am wiping a nose every five minutes, wouldn't be a cooking day.

                    aww noo:hug:

                    I was told helping with food preparation encourages "some" kids to eat certain foods they'd otherwise dismiss....ummm never happen here yet

                        I know it's a great learning experience. I was being facetious. It's something my mom never had the patience for. I probably inherited that trait from her so when I do set aside enough time to allow the kids to help, then the whole bowl gets a sneeze attack, it's like REALLY? Come on guys! I need to invest in face masks this winter if we're gonna keep on cooking together. And right now we're between colds so it came unexpected. Must've been flour up the nose or something. Hahaa

                          I know it's gross, but really - any germs would be killed in the oven. Just sayin'...

                          And if I'm not eating it (LOL!!), I would go ahead and wipe those cookies with a towel, pop 'em in the oven, and feed 'em to the kids!!

                          Too gross??? LOL

                            Maybe my thinking is wrong but, wouldn't baking it in the oven kill off any germs?:confused:
