Do any of you have a age limit on the children you care for? I was thinking of only taking children from the age of 12months-6. This past summer was my first summer with daycare kids and was a complete nightmare. I only had one dcb that was 9 and my own son who was 9 and I about went crazy. My son is gone most of the days during the summer, with friends, at the pool etc. I don't feel like he should have to stay home to play with him. So do you accept older school aged kids?? My state you can accept children until the age of 11, but wow them older kids are toughies!
Age Limit?

The only SA kids I care for are kids that were with me from birth and have just recently gone to school. Typically they don't continue to come past the first grade as our town has excellent camps and summer programs to help with school age care.
When I first started my daycare years ago I did take school agers, but that was when my own children were that age, so it was a natural fit. I have no desire at all to care for the older kids now, though, they are just too much work::

I love these age discussions, because it's so funny that I'm exactly the opposite - I love the older age group best! I've got a great group of SA's this year. Sure, they have their moments, but they also feed themselves, go to the bathroom unassisted (and don't make messes in there), clean up after themselves, and generally keep themselves entertained. I generally take ages 5 to 10 only, though I've been doing some younger drop-ins over the last couple of months.
I like to keep things simple in the summer, with only 1 full timer, or (like this past summer) I take off altogether. I wouldn't be able to do that with younger children.
I may feel differently when my own are older, but right now, I'm happy with my situation.- Flag

i have one SA right now that drives me INSANE...but she comes with a baby brother so i have to....shes not here for the next 6wks since brother has been born and i'm really thinking of letting her know i cant take them....i have another 2wks to think before telling her to give her a months notice....its been sooo nice not having her b/a ....no can stand her sadly. my kids, the dck's...its been peaceful. i do not take SA on a normal basis...less $ , time (have to take to busstops/pickup from bus) and tired of attitudes for crap $..i get enough attitude from my own 4- Flag

I may feel differently when my own are older, but right now, I'm happy with my situation.)) they fight, bicker, whine, destroy everything, complain they are bored, are the pickiest eaters, destroy the bathroom, jump on furniture, you name it. and FYI, i am structured, have tons of activites, expect proper behavior, and do all i can to make my home a fun place to be. there's just no pleasing them, or teaching them manners. i used to prefer SA too.....until this group came along.

If the child is too old to nap or rest, then I do not keep them.
My SA children are 2- 5 year olds right now, we are on fall break and they are really good. I only have one that is giving me fits because he has no manners but he is only 3. I have decided that on breaks I am going to start taking a couple of days off because it is overwhelming. I have 9 kids here and someone just asked me to keep another SA on a part time basis. My oldest is 16, so she doesn't count. But that still will leave me with 9 children ages 10 down to 1. Summer is going to be interesting, I am not sure how I will handle that!- Flag

after this summer I'm done with sa kids, they are rude, mean and are very disrespectful. I cannot stand the fact that they think they can do whatever they want and get away with it. I don't know how many times my voice was so hoarse from yelling at them. I'm so done!- Flag
