ok I get it he is a handful a HUGE handful but think of this statement would you say it to the parent of the child ? and would you say it to your license rep or new parents you are interviewing.
This is Johnny's chair with the safety strap. He sits in it for 10 minutes with a toy while I do activities with the other children.
Unfortunately it does not sound so great in writing. I think if we would not do something in front of licensing or a parent then we should not ever do it.

I guess I'm confused as to how a chair with a strap is different than a highCHAIR with a strap or a booster with a strap??
When we do projects here we do them at the kitchen table and everyone sits in their normal chair- most a booster strapped in or a high chair strapped in. If I have littles that cannot do the project or activity they have something else- maybe a few toys. They are part of the group and learning as they watch.
And yes I would do this if licensing was here or a parent was here. My job is to manage a group of children of varying ages and make sure they are all safe and involved-
I don't think the fact that it is a child's chair makes a diff IMO
. I'd like to strap him in at the table with a few toys while I work with them in small groups.
?
Maybe other states rules are different. this is the part that bothers me. and no it does not matter that it is a highchair or a low chair. The child would be required to sit for 10 minutes when it is not meal time. That is the part my state would have problems with. to me small groups are fantastic. But the other children should be allowed to explore and play during the time we are occupied with other children.

Yes- that is the diff then... I can have them in a high chair or pack n play not sleeping for up to a half an hour *i believe*... Would have to look to confirm exact time limit- it has never been close to that so I've never worried.
Our rule of thumb is if they sit in a highchair to eat they sit in a highchair for art/crafts. When they graduate to to the table for meals they do for crafts also. I do not believe we have any type of rule here for high chairs/ equipment other than to use as needed for safety.
So, my two toddlers (age 15 months and 18 months) are currently strapped into their booster seats at the table coloring. They have been there for almost 30 minutes now...happy as clams....
Would this be considered "confinement" or against the rules in some areas.... ??
I totally understand that some providers (Cheerio throwers) abuse or mis-use the concept of strapping them in a chair to play but honestly, I think disallowing this kind of activity is ridiculous...... another rule that basically says since ONE provider was wrong in how she did this, ALL providers are wrong.
The first pic reminds me of a post/thread that was on here once.
A mom said she went to dc to pick up her child and they had a scarf wrapped around the child's waist so that he would stay in the chair to eat and the mom was kind of mad and wondered if it was normal or something like that. Do you remember that one? It just looks so funny to me! ::
Why would strapping a child to a chair (for safety purposes) so the child can play with toys while she works with 4 yr olds be wrong?
I place my toddlers in a room with a gate so they are "confined" (for safety reasons) in one area while working with my preschoolers.
I see nothing wring with that. The only time it would be wrong in my opinion is if the child had no toys/food and was left there for long periods of time.

It sounds fine to me. In fact, when I have a few children in high chairs eating and some get finished before others, I get the ones that aren't finished yet a toy, book or puzzle.
One day my licensor was there and sitting in the same room. She was fine with it.
I've also done it if I was doing an activity with the older ones just like the OP. In fact today, I put a baby in an activity chair thingy (right after having him on the floor for an hour) so I could sit on the floor with the two older ones and we did a game for vocabulary. The baby would have been crawling over and eating the picture cards we had.
I would be fine if I were a parent if a provider did it with my child. Better that than chewing on cards or putting a small piece of whatever in his mouth.

My inspector would say yes..... She insists 20 minutes is the maximum for confinement equipment (seats, swings, bouncers, high chairs, potty attachment (has arm rests), etc.) outside of posted mealtimes.
***BTW, while searching the WRITTEN State regs this morning it says nothing about it other than confinement equipment can NEVER be used in a "disciplinary" (to teach) fashion (Not to be confused with punishment. We are never allowed to *punish*.)
.....then when I read my inspectors guidance manual for the subcontracted CCR&R (what she has to go by) it says she is supposed to interview me about my use of confinement eqiupment and discourage its use entirely.
**Why yes, I did toss all mine out, except for portable high chairs, few years ago.**
