    Goopy Eye - Send Home?

So my policy is to send home for pinkeye...but dcm said dcb has an ear infection (both ears) so goopy eye could be a result of the ear infection which she says he is on antibiotics for. However his eye is red and draining green goop profusely...and he is starting to become lethargic...suspecting that maybe his meds are wearing off but I have nothing to give. What would you do?

Well- here is the good news. Pink eye is not contagious after 24 hours on an antibiotic- even oral...
But I would probably send home for him not feeling well

I'm just hesitating because it very well could be fine because he's on antibiotics...but I don't know if it's viral...plus we are all sick from a nasty cold that caused dcm to keep her older children home from school but not daycare...she called it allergies that magically spread to everyone...including the baby. I don't mind watching kids with colds but lying to me bugs me...and now I can't trust her not to lie to me about this eye thing (she's a nurse so she knows it wasn't allergies). How can I circumvent the inevitable argument that it's just caused by his ear infection? Do I get a dr note? What specifics do I need from the dr to allow him back in? Sorry for the questions...just been tough getting her to keep kids home for illness for the above mentioned reasons...

I have never ever ever seen someone who has that extreme reaction to an antibiotic... Symptoms like that warrant sending home and a possible drs visit. Also, if a parent lies to me about an illness or masking symptoms its an automatic violation of our contract and qualifies an immediate termination if I see it fit. The kid is not reacting to antibiotics. He has pink eye/ conjunctivitis. Send him home before everyone gets it... including the baby..

I would call and say dcb isn't feeling well, isn't able to participate today because of it (if true) and he has goopy eyes I'm suspecting is pink eye.
He needs to be home until... Or you have a dr note confirming it IS NOT CONTAGIOUS.
She can't argue if he feels well or not, and if you request it clearly she doesn't have much option to argue. If she says its probably from the ear inf say- I understand but any goopy eyes need a dr note to return or be in meds for 24
Hours (or back when no longer goopy- however you do it).

Our public school system no longer excludes for pink eye. I do, but I was surprised to learn that.

If he's miserable, send him home!

Our school doesn't either. And neither do I. I rarely see it but when I have, it's never been a problem.

But I do exclude if they are unable to participate in the daycare day.

My son's eyes almost always get goopy with ear infections for some reason, so it really could be the ear infection. Actually, one time the only way I knew he had an ear infection was because his eyes gooped up. That being said, even though I know it is a possibility, I would still exclude based on the symptoms until I knew for sure it wasn't pink eye. That is just way too contagious to take any chances. If all else fails, just blame licensing and say they require you to exclude for any possible contagious illness until the child has been deemed no longer contagious.

Well I called dcm and she brought meds along with a dr note. It is not contagious but rather a side effect from his ear infections. Dcm offered to take him home but I decided to let him stay since he already is down for a nap. He will be picked up shortly after nap time. I just worry about how he has been sick for over a month...

Hope that is all it turns out to be! I would suggest excluding based on symptoms, not causes. A draining eye and acting differently would tell me to exclude. You never know, and it sounds like the poor thing needed more rest and TLC from home.

Yeah I've decided next time he goes home dr note or not. My whole crew is sick from his "allergies" now despite constant hand washing, wiping, and disinfecting. Just so frustrating that we've been stuck in this rut for a month. This winter is not going to be fun. Guess we'll be doing early naps today since everyone is drooping and crabby...
