    Learning to Roll

5 month old DCG is in that super frustrating (for her and me!) stage of being able to roll to her tummy, but not to her back yet. So she is happy for a few minutes on the tummy and then gets bored or frustrated or tired or whatever, and starts to fuss and then cry. How long do I let her struggle before helping her back over where she's happy?

I'd step in to help when her crying goes from frustrated to upset, frantic, or angry. Hopefully the rolling happens soon!

I would let her get frustrated and cry a bit, not rush to aid or fix everything. at 5 months old, I would expect that she could do full rolling so I would imagine that she is not getting enough floor time. If she really gets worked up and distraught, i would sit next to her for a bit and try to soothe with my voice and a few pats but again, not doing anything for her as far as constantly repositioning her. she needs to figure this out on her own.

My own child hated being on her tummy and would scream/ cry because she couldn't figure how to roll back over. In retrospect I wish I had done the above and NOT moved her. She will get it soon enough.

I give them a few min but once I notice they are just stuck I assist- I may move an arm out of the way or help them roll but they still have to work for it and they get the sensation. I find it helps with the process- they get the body movement/placement that needs to happen to get back over

My 7 week old is having this problem...seriously!!!

I have never seen a baby less than 4/5 months who could roll over...especially a premature one...but here she goes...

            My grandmother was completely astonished...

She tries to roll back but of course her neck muscles aren't strong enough...it worries me because sometimes she face plants but we do get a lot of the frustrated screaming. I always help because she's getting ahead of herself.

I know I need to go back to work...I talk about my baby wayyyy to much

I should have said this at first--she's five months by age/birth date but she's been running consistently about 4 weeks behind what I'm used to. I think she's developmentally more like 4 months. I know, the books all say that there's no difference but seriously, I think there is a difference between a 36 weeker and a 40 weeker, sometimes anyway.

My kids never rolled much at all...or if they did I really don't remember when! I know DD sat by 5 months crawled at 6 and walked at 10...and DS sat, crawled, and learned to pull up at 6 months (within three weeks...it was a busy three weeks) then walked just before 9 months. But rolling? NO clue. They were both born able to turn onto their side though...

Hunni, don't feel bad talking about your darling baby! I don't think it's possible to talk TOO much about your own kiddos

Familycare, that's what I've been doing. I try to talk her through the process, "Oh you feel so stuck, do you want my help? Here, you need to get your arm under you like this and then push and...whoop! There you go! You rolled back over!" of course she usually keeps yelling at that point, but hey, I try...

My pediatrician told me to let them get frustrated and cry for a few minutes...he says that frustrated period is when they're working on building up the muscles they need to roll back. I'd give it 3-5 minutes.

My littlest one can roll from back to front as well. And he can use his hands and do a push up wke he's in his tummy also. He's been holding his head up during tummy time since he was a few weeks old. He's a preemie too. Is surprising because he's now a chunky monkey.

Oh wow, i did discover today that she can sit unassisted. Couldn't do that last week!

I feel better though since asking; 3-5 minutes of annoyance was what I was allowing before helping her.

Amazing how fast things change!! Makes sense they are building muscles while doing the arching on their belly-
                        Keep doing what ya do

my ds was rolling over before his 3 month check the dr did not believe me. then he did it in front of her and she quickly put her hand on him so her would not fall off the exam table.. then told me I was in trouble. LOL

I did have a child with some special needs and we used to pattern him for rolling over and then crawling later. so I would help just a little back an forth until he figured it out one day.
