    Your Policy on Diarrhea?

What are your policies on diarrhea? I have a new DCB. Been here for 3 weeks. And I don't remember if he ever has had a normal poop. I have questioned his parents about this and I don't seem to be getting anywhere. Its been at least 2 weeks of diarrhea. My policy says it has to stay in the pants. Or they are sent home for 24 hours. I am thinking when they pick him up to tell the parents they have to bring him to the doctor. It can't be viral or he would have other symtpoms. So that means it must be bacterial. Unless they are feeding him alot of sugar and fruit. Which I did question them about multiple times. They are saying now he hasn't. But early on they were saying oops sorry we gave him a meal of fruit.

I also have one that has watery bowl movements daily about that same age.......

I chalk it up to just a poor diet. The kid shows up eating cookies at 7am many days and a juice box in hand.

here is a site that I found a few months back when he started.

Also take into consideration, that teething could also be the cause of loose or watery bowl movements...

My daughter is 2.5 years old and I don't think she's ever had a "solid" stool. She has dairy and soy allergies and even with her having a clean diet (nothing she's allergic to) she has loose stool. Not watery, but soft; VERY soft. Its because of what she eats. Since she is so restricted she eats mostly proteins, vegetables and fruit. It causes her to have poop that other people would consider abnormal. She also still poops up to 3-4 times a day on the regular. Its possible that may just be his normal stool consistency, especially if it has been 2 weeks.

On a different note, I have other kids younger than her that have thicker "pancake poops" that most people would consider a 'normal' consistency. Each kid is on a different schedule. One poops 3-4 times a day and that's his normal @ 14 mo. The other poops 1-2 times a day @15 mo. I also have one girl that basically poops 'pebbles' because she eats no fruit or veggies and she poops a small amount almost every time she sits on the potty. If either of those kids have a soft BM I note it. If they have watery/loose or questionably soft & acidic stool my policy is they get sent home on the 3rd one NO MATTER WHAT THE CAUSE IS and cannot come back the next day.

I do the 3rd just because I know from experience that 1 meal can affect a BM and it may work through their system after 1-2 diapers. After the 3rd I consider that consistent diarrhea and warrants exclusion. Good luck!

No this isn't loose. This is explosion. Nothing solid at all. Except some remnants of something he has ate.

I have never seen a toddler have the runs for 3 weeks with teething. i asked the dad to bring him to the doctor. I'm thinking its bacterial. The smell is unreal. Yikes I can't keep doing these diapers. The parents need to deal with this already.

Ditto here, I had to get permission to bathe him the other day because it was that bad. I think that it is because of the kids diet. I can't think what else would cause watery explosive bowl movements for 3 months.

I would be concern about dehydration

well the dad called said he would keep him home tomorrow and spend day and weekend trying to stop it. I guess he isn't bringing him to the doctor. It could be diet. Maybe he isn't telling me.

I had a little girl on Monday with diarrhea. She is parttime and was going to come back the next day but the mom kept her home. She came back today and she had diarrhea again. The mom had said she thought it was from Koolaid. I had questioned her the night before she said she was fine. I told her when she picked her up. She can't come with diarrhea. I can't do that again. Diarrhea like that I just can't do.

My policy is two episodes of diarrhea and they go home until they are 24 hours with solid BM on a typical diet. I just don't get paid enough to deal with it... I don't care why they have it- just bring them back when they don't

Yes- the first one (as long as there is no other symptoms) I give the benefit of the doubt that maybe something didnt settle right and the parents get a heads up- if there is another one that day they get sent home.

                          This is what I do!!

I do afternoon shift so by the time I get them one times they have been junked up all day. I have one of the three sibling set that this occasionally happens with.

I text mom after the second with a heads up and if a third happens she has to pick up.
