    What Do You All Think?

My six week old daughter with on Enfacare preemie formula. She's been having stomach pain, stinky gas and blowouts daily.

I talked to her doctor today and she said its all normal. In fact she said that it may seem "like she's having gas and loose stool". Um, I know stinky toots.and poop leaking out of a diaper when I see it.

She also said "the questions you're asking me makes me know you didn't read the books I gave you". So I'm supposed to read a book instead of asking my daughters pediatrician about my concerns?? Isn't that part of her job?

    I don't know if I like her...

Anyway, what do you guys think about the formula situation?

I would definitely change her Doctor.
I'm not sure of the formula thing but I once had a Dr. tell me that I should bundle up my baby because it is cold outside.
Well the nurse had me take his clothes off for the exam and he came in a thick pram suit that I had just taken off!
So, maybe you should find a Dr. that is more supportive.
Yes, it is her job to help you and the baby.

how long has she been on the formula?

yes your doctor should be listening to your concerns and providing help. but dont rely solely on the doctor. you are the mom. you need to look for answers as well. of course we are not experts on everything in the medical field but you need to document what is happening to your daughter and be her advocate. if the doctor has provided reading material related to your daughters feeding issues, why have you not read that?

I have read it. It was just a generic baby magazine. Nothing specific to my daughter, preemies or Enfacare. I also have read everything they gave me from the hospital, countless baby websites, and anything else I could find.

But as her doctor,I feel she should be the person I direct questions about my baby to. I wanted her to know of issues I'm having with my child.

Additionally, nowhere have I read that daily painful, smelly gas and blowouts are par the course for her formula or age.

She's been on the formula about 4 weeks. The blowouts have been going on about three weeks.

I would say she's reacting to the dairy in the formula, personally.
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

I would look for another Pediatrician with a better "bedside manner". If I felt that my Pediatrician did not listen to my concerns, that would be my last visit! JMHO

This. I went through that with my dd and she also had PROJECTILE vomitting (this was a reaction to breast milk because I was eating dairy products) and the dr kept shrugging me off "youre a new mom, babies spit up yadayadayada" well after 4.5 months she stopped gaining weight and they finally referred me to a specialist. Shes allergic to dairy and soy. They made me stop breatfeeding, put her on a special formula and that was the end of that. Problem solved, started gaining weight normally and stopped having diarrhea, vomiting and gas.

You should be able to talk to your daughters dr and feel like they are listening. She should have answers for you and if she doesn't she needs to refer you elsewhere. I unfortunately (2 years later) STILL have been unable to find a new Pediatrician and very rarely take her in there because they routinely have no idea what they are talking about.

I would switch her formula to good start. way more gentle for a child, but it takes a week before you see if its a good formula. Don't expect results right away from switching fromulas.

I had a mom who, breast fed for one month, then switched formulas 4 times in one month and couldn't figure out why her child had diarrhea and was spitting up.

and sadly I too learn more on the internet then at a dr's office.

I definitely agree. Many people (pretty much every one except me) in my family are either lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy, or were as children. Including her father.

I'm not sure I'll be going back to that doctor.

Very sad that they made you stop breastfeeding. If that was your choice, that's fine, but if they said that was your only option then that is a very wrong statement. It takes work, but you could easily EASILY have kept breastfeeding by altering your own diet.

                            um....yeah, definitely don't go back.

Unfortunately, soy has its own host of problems and soy and dairy issues often come hand in hand, and the other choices that aren't dairy and aren't soy are pretty expensive and I don't know much about them healthwise.

It happens so often- that moms are told to stop bf when there is no reason too!

Honey- yes try to find a Ped that listens- I have an amazing one and they have to be willing to work with you and listen to you! It makes all the difference. Also so many babies are lactose intolerant in their first 6 months or so and grow out of it- my son was and now (17) he drinks so much milk!!
