How Many Books do You Read?

I was curious so decided to start a poll....

How many books do you read to the daycare children per day? I usually read 1 during circle time and 1-2 right before nap. I will read more if the children ask and/or we have time. I feel bad as I feel I should really read to the kids more! We are just so short on time usually and now with my group being so young my time is limited even more .

I read about three at circle time because they ask fr mre, more, more. I also do lots of flannel board stories and/or prop stories, but not every day.

In my former life I was addicted to making fl. board stories and activities. They have been so well loved and used over the years. I have over 300. No lie! They are a combo of stories, math counting poems, and misc. activities.
Some are over 20 yrs old. Some are much newer! Literacy is my first love when working with kids.

I have never read a story at nap time...it's kinda weird I don't! I am too tired by that time and need a break! My group is young too. Don't feel guilty....you are doing a great jobs with story time. Most of us work alone and do it all. We only have so much time & energy!

My group is 6 wks, 8 m, 8m, and 22 mo.

I read between 5-10 per day. My DH is a librarian though so I just put books on hold and he brings them to me I don't have to make extra trips for it every week, they are all themed around our letter of the week. My DCK's love books and would probably even want MORE!

I read at least 5 but closer to 10 a day. Main reason is because they dont get read to at ALL at home.

How do you hold up the book and then do the flannel story...or do you just do the flannel story and tell them all? I also don't get how people do puppets during story time. It's all so awkward to me and I feel like I need 3 more hands ::.

Ay, I should be better about reading more books . I guess another reason I don't read as much as I should is because I get frustrated while reading and it makes me unmotivated. This is how it goes:the 1 year olds and one of my 2 year olds don't pay attention and wander and take out every imaginable toy when I'm "distracted," my 4 yo dd tests me 99% of the time (she asks questions completely unrelated to the story, she "doesn't like that book," somebody is sitting too close to her), then one of the 1 year olds will literally stand 2 inches from the book and block everyone's view, then I have to redirect literally about 10 times during a short book....ahh...by the time I'm done I want to tear my hair out and hide out in a closet! A book that should take about 5 minutes to read always ends up taking 10-15 minutes because of the constant interruptions.

The amount of books available is not an issue.....I get books from the library weekly and they are related to the theme. We have a ton of books to read .

I read 1-3 at circle time, 1 or 2 before nap, and 1-3 at afternoon story time and sometimes random books here and there when they ask.
I voted 3, 4, 5+ because it's anywhere from 3 to 8 or more.

That is SO sad about the mom never having a book for her child. My goodness!

3-6 planned books. Others as the kids ask.

1-2 at circle time, each of the kids pick 1 for nap (so 2-4)

A minimum of 4. Usually it winds up being about 6-8.

Honestly our day is revolved around reading......everything we do relates to books. so I would say in the ball park of about 8 different books, but then read the same book about 10 times that same day.



Everything that we do for that day will resort back to the book. We will do craft projects around it, dramatic play, build with blocks something related, and etc. We could go back and read the same book a million times that day if I did what they wanted me to do.

And then I read one at nap time. Typically that book is longer than the ones I read at story time, because before nap I have a captive audience

I voted 1 and 2 books a day. For the exact reason above. The kids do not sit still are fidgety and start talking. I have one dcg that if I say shhhh she starts scream crying. It's very frustrating!!!!

However, we do listen to books on tape during snack and lunch. I'm not even sure if the kids are listening or even care!!!

I love to make flannel board stories. I don't hold up the book and show them the book, I want them to focus on the flannel board.

Often we do a LOT of math with the flannel board. like 5 little apples in a tree, growing apples just for me. I picked one apple-what a treat ______apples left, so good to eat.....

I also do a lot of nursery rhymes with them. Or lets get susie/billy dressed.... THe kids love that because I am very silly. I will put the shoes on the hands or the socks on the head. They think I am crazy. I will ask then where do they go.

Flannel board is another way to teach colors. I love the 5 ice cream cones at the ice cream shop.

you can get a lot of good ideas from pinterest. I used to buy some, but I found joy in making them myself......
