State Specific Question--Ohio Type A home

I've been thinking about getting registered as a Type A childcare home--stated on ODJFS website as a home providing care to 7 to 12 children at one time, with no more than 4 of them under age 2. I don't want to do this because I want 7 to 12 children, just so that I have some more flexibility when I have another baby in a year or so (I hope...) and when my sisters need childcare for their kids occasionally.

What I'm wondering is if that's one person providing care for 7 to 12 children or if that assumes/requires that you have an assistant, another full-time care provider with you. I haven't been able to find that information, and am very curious what you guys might be able to find for me!

Ohio Type A homes, although legal by the state, can not be licensed in some counties (my county, Franklin, doesn't allow Type A homes, but if I live 1/2 mile north in Delaware county, I could be Type A) So check with your individual county before proceeding.

If you are Type A and have more than 6 children on site at any given time, you must have 2 registered adults present (background checks, TB tests, etc) Any time that your numbers are #6 or less, you'll be okay by yourself.

Go to http://jfs.ohio.gov/cdc/rules_forms.stm for all of Ohio's rules concerning Type A and B homes and licensing regulations.

    Hope this helps!

Yep, what Pammie said! I was going to say, I think the jfs site tells you that you have to have an assistant for so many hours a day or something similar.

Thank you! I do live in Franklin--I didn't know they didn't allow Type A homes. Weird...and crap. That puts a crimp in my plans to ever have another child. Plus, I've got TWO DCMs planning to start TTC at the same time DH and I have been talking about trying to TTC. Plus, I don't much want to hire an assistant. Grr...thanks though! That's what I needed and couldn't find. I hate trying to navigate that website.

btw, Pammie, you must live not to far away from me...I'm near Westerville and Easton.

That does stink for you. I am not sure how old your DD is but once she is in school she will not count in your numbers, at least that is what my registration office told me (I am just west of you in Madison County). I have two older school-agers of my own, ages 7 & 9 & they are not included in my numbers.

She's 3. I guess it's not going to stop me from having another...just make me think harder about it, maybe delay it a bit...we're really going to enjoy all this income we're getting now!

Actually the age is 6-years for your own child not to be included in your numbers in Ohio. (Considering some kids start full-time school at age 5, they still have to be counted in your numbers, whether related to you or not)

Well "hi" neighbor! I'm in Westerville - just 10 minutes from either Easton or Polaris!

My kids were both 6 when they started school (early Fall b-days, did not meet the cut-off of Aug 1st) that's why I said that, I wasn't thinking of younger Ks. But you are right, they do have to be 6 or older to not be included in the numbers.
