    Dogs In Daycare

We had a dog for a long time but over 2 months ago one of the kids opened the back door and the dog ran away. I haven't been able to find him and no one has turned him in. We are now looking to add another dog. I really want a Great Dane as they are amazing dogs! All my parents know that we are looking at getting another dog but haven't talked to them yet on the breed. When I tell the parents if someone has a problem with it, would you just get a different/smaller breed or give them notice to find another daycare?

I LOVE Great Danes! I used to have a blue merle, the sweetest dogs ever

I would not let parents dictate what kind of dog I get but I would be prepared for the possibility of losing some clients that aren't comfortable with a large breed.

I think really it is only a question you can answer...

Do you keep the dog out with the daycare kids or no? I think if you don't it is much less of an issue than if you do-
If you do plan on keeping the dog out:
Can you financially afford to lose present and future clients because of a pet?
Are you willing to commit to training so the dog is easily controlled?

Also- are you willing to change something that will effect your family for a decade based on business?

I would be hesitant to enroll my child in a daycare with such a large dog- if the dog was amongst the children. I would need to see the dog with the children to be comfortable. My concern wouldn't be intentional harm but accidental because of size.
My dogs aren't out with the daycare kids- that way I don't have to worry about it . One of the best decisions I've made...

If I were in this position I would just have to step back and make absolutely sure that a pet is worth possibly losing current and future clients. For many it's a simple "Yes!", but for me and my family it would be a no-go.

My sister has a great dane... he's the sweetest dog. He loves the children in his life. He doesn't jump up or get excited, but there IS a huge safety issue with him. HIS TAIL! That thing whips around so fast that it gave my niece a welt on her face once.

I've always wanted a great dane! Make sure you have PLENTY of time to train them thoroughly. They are very sweet but big and clumsy! If them get the wrong idea and jump up on someone you could have a serious liability issue if he knocks someone over. That wouldn't stop me from getting one, but you need to do right by the breed and get them trained. Other than that, I think you need to get what you want. Its your family. That's like telling your families that you are thinking of having another child and then one parent stepping up and saying "I don't want a baby around dcb". Forget that!! ::

You might want to check with your licensing regulations or even your business and home insurance policies. Some breeds may not allowed in a home daycare setting (Pit bulls, Dalmatians) or may not be covered by insurance. I heard some home insurance companies wont cover Akitas- in non daycare homes!

I personally wouldn't have a problem with it, all of the Great Danes I've known are very gentle. I personally have 2 chocolate labs and I've never had a problem getting clients. My dogs are allowed around the kids, but honestly there isn't much interaction between them, they do their own thing during the day. I used to have a Maltese, who was small and honestly I worried about him being around the kids, I purposely kept him separate because he wasn't a huge fan of lots of kids, I've never once had that worry with the labs. I think it all depends on the breed. I wouldn't let my daycare families dictate what kind of dog I had, but we are a dog family and have always and will always have at least one.
