My 20 yo dd and I found this today and observed it for quite awhile. Then we put it back up in the crab apple tree, worried I'd mow over it. But it was the coolest and biggest caterpillar I think I've ever seen around here. At first we were freaked out by it but as we watched it, it was just the most amazing thing. So, of course I had to look it up to see what it was.

I'm like a little kid myself when I discover something new(for me) and unusual in nature. I still remember the day I watched a huge flock of cedar waxwings light in my lilac tree, then fly off to who knows where. Only time I've ever seen cedar waxwings. Or the scarlet tanager my neighbor brought to show me one day; again the only time I've ever seen one. Or the beautiful luna moth sitting on my tree during my ds's high school graduation party, 15 years ago. Never seen another in all my 59 years.
I love sharing things like this with daycare.
