Illness... Snot... um WWYD

So brief summary.... I have two PT girls ages 2 and 3... they were scheduled to be off the second week in July; however, ended up coming one day (Wednesday) anyways.... said day the youngest had an extremely runny nose and a slight cough.... mom of course said her allergies were acting up again... well come friday I started to come down with a nasty head/chest cold that progressed into a sinus infection that I had to see my DR for last Thursday... the cough has also lingered .... I can usually kick colds fast this one I was not so lucky....

Well fast forward to this week and same girl still has a nasty runny nose (thick green) and she has an occasional cough that sounds very similar to mine. She has also been fairly difficult as opposed to her usual demeanor this whole time... anyhow.... how would you all approach this situation? My own baby (6 months) is now starting to cough like us! I am starting to feel it was not allergies as the culprit!

I require a doctor's visit for any cold symptoms lasting longer than 5 days. This is well beyond the 5 days....so exclude until the child visits the doctor to rule out chest infections or sinus infections.

I wouldn't allow the doctor to give permission to come back to daycare though....I decide that...I only require a doctor's visit so they doctor can diagnose what's wrong and then I decide if I will take the child or exclude them until better.

I just sent a DCB home with same symptoms. Dad said he started coughing last night. G'ma picked up & said he has been sick all weekend.

green snot after 2 weeks or a child with a history of sinus infections can mean sinus infection. other than that she said it is normal

Same here. Our doctor will not treat any cold symptoms until after 10 days without ANY improvement. Unless of course my daughters asthma kicks up in the process, but even en no additional treatment other than the PRN nebulizers.

As far as myself, because I have lung disease, I get treated for anything bronchitis or cough related rather quickly to prevent pneumonia or a hospital visit.

But as far as the kids are concerned, 10 days without improvement before they treat.

So, I require the same from the daycare kids. Unless I get a weird feeling its not a cold at all.

Colds are viruses. They ARE contagious.

I do, however, exclude if they are too sick to participate in our daily routine or need more care than I can give.

I have caught the allergies soooooo many times in the last 10 years, but never prior to that......
