    How Much Sleep??

Anybody have any good charts that show how much sleep children need by age?
My 8 week old dcg slept for me 5 1/2 hours yesterday out of her 10 hour day here (IMHO, that's a good amount of awake time for her age). DCM came in this morning and said if I could keep her awake as much as possible she would appreciate it, because she only got 3 hours of sleep last night. Of course, I'm not going to do that. I just want to add a visual to my handbook and to show her if it comes down to it.

I would assure her that the adjustment to daycare can sometimes cause sleep patterns to change for a bit, and should even back out quickly. Any major change in a child's routine can mess with sleep. That's why consistency is SO IMPORTANT.

There is a book out called Healthy sleep habits, happy child. It is a really good book and has specific guide lines for each age group. Its one of those books you can read straight through or just use as a reference book. Ofcourse you could just google it as well. Either way parents are always suprised at how much sleep kids really need. They are under the misconception that if you deprive a child of sleep that they will actually sleep longer at bedtime. When actually thats not the case at all.

Those guidelines are very handy. I have a dc mom who is sending her 5 yr old to kindergarten this year and she was asking me about what bedtime she should have. Its hard to believe they have never had a bedtime for her. She stays up as late as she wants and (tries) to sleep in late too. I printed this off and am giving her a copy at pickup today.

            Thanks ladies!
I tried to google it and kept getting guidelines that varied a lot.

This has been an issue with me as well, thanks for the links! I have a 1year old dcb who was so fussy I wasnt sure what I was going to do with him. He would scream for hours and we had no idea what was wrong. I soon learned from dad that dcb would so much as wimper at home and mom would pick him up. This child is with me 11.5 hours per day and I've had him since he was 3 mos old. He knows that I don't carry him around and I couldnt imagine that was the problem here. Mom of course claims she never carries him and that he just needs more sleep. He already was sleeping almost 5 hours per day while he was here. A morning nap and afternoon. She told me he should be having another late afternoon nap. After 3 days of 3 naps a day for this poor child I asked dcm how he is sleeping at night. She claims he sleeps better now because its been proven that the more sleep you get during the day, the better you will sleep at night. Has anyone ever heard of this? Anyway, this child now sleeps almost 8 hours of the 11.5 that he is here, which is great for me, but I seriously think there is something wrong with him. Any help?

yes, to some extent that's true, but sleeping that much sounds fishy. All he's doing is sleeping, eating, and being carried around (at home). When, exactly, is he supposed to experience anything?

One year is about 14-15 hours in a 24 hour period. Most kiddos that age sleep 10-11 hours at night, and then take 2 naps worth 4 hours or so ( I like 1 hour and 3 hours myself).
