I recently saw something on Pinterest about using coffee grounds in sensory bins instead of actual dirt. I had been collecting it and drying it for a couple weeks and had a minuscule amount when thinking in terms of sensory bins. I got one of those genius moments and called one of my girlfriends who works at a local coffee shop. I gave her a couple buckets to fill and she called me at 9 am the next morning and said they were already filled!!! happyface 3 cookie trays and many hours of oven drying later I have loads of "dirt" for sensory bins! I'm thinking "Bugs and Worms" first and then ''Trucks and Bulldozers" and then of COURSE gotta do "Dinosaurs". Does any one have any ideas for other things to throw in for each topic?

I put it at 250 and just let it slow roast for about 45 mins. Stirring it once half way through. I had each cookie sheet full with about and inch and a half high of coffee. Some of it got a little scorched but I think that's going to be better for any one who tries to "try" the dirt. It will definitely discourage them from doing it again.- Flag

I used it for my Bugs theme ... I put in those foam sticker bugs and the kids dug around for them, pulled them out with plastic tongs, and then we put them into our spider webs that we painted. It was their way of catching bugs in their webs. They loved it! They loved smelling it.- Flag

I don't want to dig for itand this is free as opposed to buying it in bags. Its also being reused as opposed to being thrown in the trash which I'm a big fan of. There's definitely nothing wrong with dirt. We play with dirt plenty outside.

Maybe for the Dinosaur one you can put in a dog bone treats or one of those squeak toy bones. You can also probably make bones with clay. Or a cave man cloth (a small swatch of leopard print fabric).- Flag
