    Nervous About Roster

Just a vent - When I started, I had with just a few infants and my own child, as I became more comfortable, clients approached me with siblings & friends and I took on more, until I was full (licensed up to 8). Now, all those kids I started with are growing up and running off to school. I will miss them terribly, and it leaves me with trying to piece together a new group of kids for fall. My DH and I became comfortable with my income at being full, it's going to be a challenge to fill up with all the right age mixtures and personalities and I'm feeling uncertain about everything at this moment. It's very nerve wracking to have so many balls in the air! I have only 2 full-timers coming back and one is 'iffy'. My subdivision is now 8 years old, and more competition has moved in, and more kids are now more grown up so I'm finding it's more difficult to fill spots. I have an interview this weekend for an infant. Wish me luck! I've had it easy... #howspoiledamI

    Good luck! happyface

Get used to it too because that IS what daycare is like.

    Things cycle continuously.

There is NO such thing as long term job security in this field.

The faster you learn to roll with it, the easier it will be to deal with/manage.

It DOES get easier each time though...

      Similar situation

I know how you feel. We've only been opened 2 years in one building and just the full school year in our newest building. We filled up fast with 10-12 every day in the Little building and 5-16 during the school year with the Big building. Once summer hit the kids started leaving us a few at a time. Some parents stayed home for the summer, some kids went to summer camps, and then a lady who had a daycare for 20 years but retired is re-opening hers and we've already lost 3 kids to her bc they've known her longer (and she's probably cheaper). It ****s not knowing day by day who you're gonna have and how long they'll be there.

On a positive note, a different daycare just opened up and they lady called one of our families to recruit their kid but they said how much they love it at our DC and how much their kid loves our staff and they'd never leave us. Feels really good to hear that

I am in the same boat at you, filled up fast and always had a waiting list or filled spots within a week or two. Normally I lose 1-2 kids to K5 and this year I'm losing five - two to K5, 3 to all day K4. I hate that these all day K4's are popping up. I have been advertising since beginning of May and have gotten nothing. I'm really starting to worry since that leaves me with three kids this fall instead of 8. I don't want to be forced to accept 18m olds. I LOVE having my little preschool of 2-5y olds.

        Good Luck with your interview!!

I'm not sure I agree that it gets easier but I do agree with everything else Black Cat wrote. Job security really doesn't exist in this field and you do have to learn to roll with the ups and downs in enrollement. (I usually say a quick prayer: "If I'm meant to continue working in this business of taking care of kids, You need to send me some!")

Out of 8 kids I have enrolled here, I have 5 who turrned 4 years old this past year. While the parents say they're all planning to keep them here for the next school year, I know I'll be losing them all by next spring/fall. There's also a good possiblity that one of my younger kids will be moving out of the area within the year. That would leave me with only 2 kids! After almost 18 years of doing d/c, I should be used to this but when this happens, my anxiety starts to build and I have to remind myself that things usually work out just fine. It's tough to stay calm, though, when your income is at risk. Good luck with your interview! I hope they sign on with you.

Exactly!! It is nerve wracking when the numbers go down! In sept I will only have one 18 month old and the rest (3) school agers! That's not
Going to pay the bills!! But I Also agree if its meant to work it will and I've been here before! I did lose 2 pre-school kids to
Grandparents because of cost and am actually wondering if I need to lower my rates some... I dont know...
            Good luck!
