    Does This Happen To Others..

When I bleach toys it seems someone ALWAYS gets sick right after I killed off all the germs on the toys!

2 weeks ago 3 of 7 kids had a stomach bug so I bleached toys. Last incident of vomiting was on friday, I think. Last wednesday DS2 started burning up while we were at a minor league ball game. He seemed really warm but, no red cheeks and not really crabby. Since it was already the bottom of the 8we stayed til the end and walked to the car to put him in the air conditioning. They had fireworks that we didn't want our other son to miss, so we watched them from the car and left immediately after. Got home 10 min. later and his fever was 104.7! Got it down pretty quickly with ibuprofen. Slept with him.

On the 4th fever was around 101 with tylenol and ibuprofen rotated every 4 hours and he began saying "mouf hurt" when eating and drinking. He is 2 and looked so pathetic with his liitle hand going up to his face while he tried to eat. But, still not too crabby. Tried putting him in for nap around 7:30 since he was sick and decided to take his temp. This time it was 105.5!!! Off to the ER we go. Strep negative. I think it was Hand, foot, mouth or herpangina(which is the throat sores associated with it). My kids have both had this and never had the rash. I know it causes the high fevers.. Sorry to rant and to my point!

This stuff only happens after I bleach all the toys from an illness!! I guess it could be coincidence since he goes all over with us to stores, library, baseball games, etc. But, annoying to say the least! And now he's used to sleeping with Mommy and won't fall asleep until 11!! Anyone else see more illness after killing all the germs?

I think that sometimes too....... I clean everything every Wednesday.

anything that gets mouthed, goes straight into the dirty bucket and gets washed daily.

For me it seems like it happens every time I steam clean the carpets, which is monthly.....

It felt like that for me this past winter when I was cleaning REALLY often. I am only required to bleach them once a week, but I was doing it far more often.

I am a firm believer that the kids do need germs so, unless I see it go into a mouth I only do it after a virus. And not a cold, unless it gets sneezed or coughed on! I am not licensed so I don't have to do it at all but, I do really feel good trying to keep the bad illnesses at bay! I am one who ALWAYS uses a wipe on shopping carts before putting ds into one though! I do bleach all doorknobs, remotes, front of cable boxes, light switches weekly though! It took me 9 hours to do just the upstairs toys so for me to do them all weekly would be a killer! In the basement I have a pretty good idea of what gets played with but, up here I don't since my kids play with everything!::

Not to rain on your parade, but most likely they were exposed beforehand and the symptoms just popped out after you cleaned. Most illnesses incubate for a while between exposure and symptoms.

I will probably get flamed for this but I started to only clean toys every couple of MONTHS (unless I saw it go in a mouth) and my kids haven't been sick in almost 2 years.... ::

I sanitize the bathroom, eating surfaces, door knobs, remotes, phones, etc daily... but toys - no way.

Kids need germs to build immunities.

I was getting ready to say I must be the odd (wo)man out again until I saw this. I rotate toys every 4-6 weeks. They get sanitized then, unless I need to kill some major cooties.

I ate dirt pies as a kid & didn't die once....

Me too although I throw things that get mouthed in the dishwasher and wash the soft stuff every second week(stuffies, doll blankies, dressup clothes in rotation) etc).

I'm fanatical about doorknobs, door frames, walls at small finger level, washroom and the table and chairs. I rarely have kids stay home sick.

I agree with both of you ladies that the more we kill all the germs, the more these kids will get sick! It is a pattern I noticed here and I would not be bothering now except I am starting a new kiddo next week who is 12 mos! I would like to keep him healthy if I can and get rid of any H,F,M still lingering(although probably already dead on it's own!) and I will continue to do so after mouthed toys like you and always stomach bugs! I don't do well with vomit!

Vomit is a whole other creature altogether. I go a little mental when someone has a stomach bug. ::
