I have a paper that was given to me from a former parent who teaches kindergarten that gives directions on how to write the letters. I use kindergarten writing paper that has the top line blue then a dotted line then a red line. So for example, the letter A is start on the red and slant up to the blue then slant down to the red and crossing at the dotted or C is start on the blue and around and open to the red.

For me, it works better if they trace first then practice writing the letter. I do each child one on one and send practice sheets home twice a week. Usually after a month just about all of them can write their name. I give each family a copy of this sheet for home and the repetition really helps. That being said, I don't force children to learn to write their names and I've had to tell many parents to back off letting them know they will learn it on their on time.

Like Blackcat said, they'll learn when they're ready.

I have a 4 1/2 yr old who went from copying his name to spelling out simple words in just a couple of weeks because it "clicked" for him. I wouldn't push it, just follow her lead when she's interested.
