I have a paper that was given to me from a former parent who teaches kindergarten that gives directions on how to write the letters. I use kindergarten writing paper that has the top line blue then a dotted line then a red line. So for example, the letter A is start on the red and slant up to the blue then slant down to the red and crossing at the dotted or C is start on the blue and around and open to the red.
For me, it works better if they trace first then practice writing the letter. I do each child one on one and send practice sheets home twice a week. Usually after a month just about all of them can write their name. I give each family a copy of this sheet for home and the repetition really helps. That being said, I don't force children to learn to write their names and I've had to tell many parents to back off letting them know they will learn it on their on time.
