    Where Do I Start....

I just want to introduce myself.
I am Tammy. I live in Ohio. I am not registered or licensed. I was recently asked to watch a friends two toddlers. The girl is 2 and the boy is 3. I have a 2 year old boy myself and I homeschool my 11 year old daughter. I am working on turning my basement into a toddler/preschool area. She is paying me $50 a day and her kids will be here mon-thur from 6:30am to 4:30pm. I am seriously considering doing this as a career if this works out. How do I get started or where do I begin? Currently I work outside the home mon-friday three hours in the evening cleaning...when my kids go to bed. It would be nice to eventually be able to give that up and work completely from home and be able to make enough money.

Thanks everyone for having me in the forum. I have been scouring all the posts and learning so much.

    Tammy

If you go to te home page of the form there is a map of the USA. Click on your state and it should give you the information your looking for.

Hi Tammy. I am also in Ohio. I would contact you county's department of job and family services to get started. They can get you the list of requirements. It really isn't that bad. At the end of the year though it is changing from county to state run and I am not sure what changes will take place at that time. Basics now include your home inspection, a physical, fingerprinting for all adults in the house, training classes, first aid and cpr.
Does your basement have 2 ways out? I believe for licensing in Ohio it must. I just wouldn't want you to put a lot of effort in it and then find out it won't pass.

Where to start- Get a hold of your states licensing department for daycares. They will direct you on where to go from there. You will most likely have to take some classes but they are usually chalk full of everything you need to do and learn. CPR/First Aid- you will need.

Welcome to the forum and world of daycare/preschool etc... look forward to your postings.

Some counties will pay for these classes. So contact your county first. They can also point you in the right direction as far as who. My last classes were taught at DJFS by a nurse.
And you will need 2 back up providers. One can be another type B. My husband is my other. THey also have to have CPR/ First Aid and the 6 hr intro class Just a heads up.

Two more questions......Do I have to be licensed? And what are family daycare type A and B?

At this point in Ohio you do not have to be licensed. I am, others on here aren't.
By being licensed I get access to training, state reimbursement, and the food program. I do feel it elevates what I have to offer. And by following the rules it helps cover my butt! It is work. But once you figure it out, it is not bad.
When I have had issues come up my county workers are awesome.
Type A can have a second person working for them and can have .. um either 10 or 12 I think.. I don't have enough square footage to do it at this point.
Type B is what I am. 6 kids 3 can be under 2. I am inspected twice yearly.

Hi Tammy! I am in Ohio also and operate legally unlicensed. I have been open since Nov. and I did not want the headache of answering to anyone other than parents! I still operate a safe, loving, and fun environment for the kids so being licensed didn't matter to my parents! I got most families on Craigslist and have had great luck with them! Cpr/first aid through our local red cross. Good Luck!!

Thank you everyone. I asked about licensing because I didn't want to be in hot water with the two I start keeping on Monday!!

I am definitely doing the first aid and cpr training. Not sure about licensing yet. I guess I'll figure that out once I see if this is something I really want to do and go from there. !!!!

I am also from Ohio & agree with the provider above, but that is just me! Not knocking anyone who wants to be licensed. I also have CPR certifications, abide well below the state ratio requirements (I have never wanted to care for more than 2 families at a time). Because I don't wish to operate with more than 3-4 kids at a time I did not want to go the route of licensing. Good luck!
