    Politically correct songs

I've been teaching my dck some of the old camp songs that I remember from the good old days. Someone on FB was talking about this song, and I was glad to be reminded of another song.

But then I remembered the line about "before the hunter shoots me dead" and wondered if I should teach it. A quick google search didn't turn up any PC versions. As a last resort, I'll try to figure out a substitute, but I'd like to teach it the way it is suppose to be.

What do you think? Original folk song or sanitized version?

Little Bunny Foo Foo........kissing them on the head or bopping them on the head?

    I do bopping!

I don't know.....parents freak out about guns. I love the old version of Little Rabbit song but I'd be nervous about upsetting parents. Maybe we do bubble wrap way too much.

Or the hunter will kiss you dead? LOL

I like to keep things real. Hunter don't kiss on the head. Ya know? IMO it is just a song and what stays with the kids the most is the rhythm and the rhyme.

I have never heard that song the way that you are mentioning it..

here is how we sing it...

        \Little bunny Foo Foo
        Hopping through the forest
        Scooping up the field mice
And bopping 'em on the head
And down came the Good Fairy
        And she said
        "Little bunny Foo Foo
        I don't like you're attitude
        Scooping up the field mice
And bopping 'em on the head"

        I'll give you 3 chances.
Then I'll turn you into a goon!
        The next day…
        Chorus

Repeat two more verses with 2 and 1 chances

        3. "I gave you two chances.
Now I'll turn you into a goon!"
        (POOF!)
And the moral of the story is:
        Hare today, goon tomorrow!

Scooping up the field mice and bopping them on the head!

You have to be a mind reader. I just realized I didn't post which song.

I was talking about Little Cabin in the Woods. We always had finger motions to go along.

            Little cabin in the woods
Little man by the window stood
            Saw a rabbit hopping by
            Knocking at his door
Help me, help me, help me, he cried
Fore the hunter shoots me dead
            Little rabbit come inside
            Safely to abide.

Since I posted this, a friend sent me this version, which I think I will use.

Help me, help me, help me, he cried
I just need a place to hide.
            Come little rabbit, come inside,
            I'll take care of you!

I think I'll keep the "safely to abide"

It's going to be hard enough to change one line of a song I've been singing for over 50 years. I'm still singing "ba-ba-ba-bababorant" when I hear Buddy Holly sing. And I've known the right words at least 30 years. ;-)

Oh, and FooFoo kisses here, simply because the first kid song tape we used said kissing and that's how my first dck learned it. It's kind of cute watching the little ones throw kisses.

              I would change it to...

for the hunter gets me fred!!

              or
before the hunter puts me in bed

or before the hunter gets my head...still a little violent

I love to make up songs

I changed Jack and the Beanstalk words when my 3 were little. I couldn't stand to say "I'll grind your bones to make my bread" or something like that it goes. I forget what I changed it to though.

We sing that one at my job, but it goes:

Help me, help me, help me, he cried
Its too cold to be outside
Come on in, the little man said
                  Rest your weary head.

I'd never heard that song til I started working there.

I always thought the old woman who lived in a shoe was a bit much
                      "She gave them some broth without any bread;
Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed."

Here's a site that I found that has a pretty good list of children's song lyrics. (as well as other songs) Unfortunately the songs mentioned in this thread aren't included in that list so no help there. :: They do have other things that might be useful to some such as science experiments and things having to do with our environment.

Here's the link to the song area:

Personally, I think it is a little sad that we (as a society) feel we have to change children's tales, fables and songs to be more "pleasant".

We ALL sang them as children and I doubt any one of us is screwed up or in therapy because of it.....maybe for other reasons but none of them being Little Bunny Foo Foo

                              Here here!!

This post and the Paula Dean controversy brings to mind the rhyme we sang as children in the sixties that contained the "N" word that is now said with the word "tiger" as a replacement.

                              Eeny meeny miney mo,
Catch a Tiger by his toe,
                              If you...etc...

Or the rhyme we said as:

                              Ding dong bell
                              *****'s in the well
                              Who put her in?
                              Little Johnny Flynn
                              Who pulled her out?
                              Little Tommy Stout
What a naughty boy was that
                              Try to drown poor *****cat,
                              Who ne'er did any harm
                              But killed all the mice
                              Ding dong bell
                              *****'s in the well
                              Who put her in?
                              Little Johnny Flynn
                              Who pulled her out?
                              Little Tommy Stout
What a naughty boy was that
                              Try to drown poor *****cat,
                              Who ne'er did any harm
                              But killed all the mice
                              In the Farmer's barn!
                              Ding dong bell

                              Who put her in?
                              Little Johnny Flynn
                              Who pulled her out?
                              Little Tommy Stout
What a naughty boy was that
                              Try to drown poor *****cat,
                              Who ne'er did any harm
                              But killed all the mice
                              In the Farmer's barn!

They changed ***** to Kitty in the 70's and now would it be acceptable in any way? The word "dong", what Johnny did (that bully!), or even that the mice are being killed. KWIM?
                              I see little people.
