    Which Do You Buy?

    Frozen chicken breasts
    Or
    Whole chicken

Do you save a lot using a whole chicken?

I only buy frozen or fresh chicken breasts. My family only eats the white meat so that's what I buy. Plus I don't think I can deal with cutting up a whole chicken, it just seems gross....

I'm sure price-wise you definitely save by buying a whole chicken but I usually buy breasts.

I'm not one to eat the dark meat and the only chicken I serve to my DCK's is either nuggets (home made with the chicken breast) or the drumsticks or legs.

DH and I buy a lot in bulk and self-package ourselves using my food saver sealer.

I buy the fresh chicken breast, cut it up & freeze it myself. It's more cost effective that way here.

I buy whole chickens. I roast them and use for 2 or three meals. You can't beat 79¢ a pound!!!!!!

I usually do whole chickens. I get them from my family's chicken farm... Within just an hour of their processing. Free. I then roast them or put them in the crock pot. No need to cut them up I just pull the meat off the bone for everyone. No need to cut it up.

If I'm doing a recipe to debone then that's pretty easy too. I put the whole chicken in a pressure cooker for 15 minutes and Whalah it's all off the bone when I open the lid.

                  Huge money saver.

I do sometimes buy big packs of legs and quarters to grill etc though.

Drum sticks are part of the chicken leg.
I like to buy whole chicken and stick it in the crockpot overnight. In the morning I pull all the meat off of the bones. Breasts are usually eaten as is, and the rest we use in enchiladas, quesadillas, chicken spaghetti and such.

the leg quarter is made up of the thigh and the drumstick ( or chicken leg)

I buy all of the above
family all likes dark meat so I buy the bulk packs of leg quarters when they are 49 cent a lb... I buy the boneless white meat for fast meals and I buy the whole chicken for roast chicken. I do know how to cut up a chicken learned when I was 14
                      It:: will wait

I buy b/s chicken breasts in bulk, organic, free range, grain fed, from a local chicken farm. It's $1.99/lb and is delivered to me by the farmer, individually frozen in vacuum sealed bags. I can thaw 1 or 100 at a time.

I DO buy whole chickens and cook them in the crockpot for soups, stews and that kind of thing (from the same place, .59/lb)

Wow! I'm so jealous! I pay $6.29/lb for local, organic, etc chicken and that's through a friend who receives the restaurant rate!

They are Mennonite (we have a large Mennonite/amish population here), and I have told the man MANY, MANY times that he is GROSSLY undercharging and he always says "My prices are fair, it's only my time and some feed that goes into it." Have to love an honest person!

We also purchase produce from the same family. They let me pick and choose which produce I want and it feels like highway robbery. I tell EVERYONE I know about them, and now about 1/2 my daycare families use them. This week my box contained 5lbs of organic tomatoes, 5 heads of organic romaine lettuce, 3 eggplant, 6 zucchini, 4 cucumbers and a LARGE bag of cherries (which were 6.99 at the grocery store this week!). $10. 10!!!!!!!!!!!!
