    Food Program/Milk/Outings

For those of you on the food program what do you do about milk when on outings?

    1. Insulated Thermos

    2. Put it in a cooler with ice all around it

    3. Buy individual cartons and put on ice/freezer packs

I buy the 18 packs of horizon organic milk (we do organic anyway) they don't need to be refrigerated, and come with a straw, so they are SUPER convenient.

Unfortunately in my area we aren't allowed to claim food that is served out of the daycare bummer since we go out a lot. I wish I could claim those meals but if its a snack I don't take milk, just water and if its lunch then I carry a small cooler with ice and take some cups with us. I take will with us in thermos like containers and so far this has worked out just fine.

IMO heat and milk do not mix! Even if you keep it cold they could end up throwing up bc they play before or after. Kids get hot! My oldest would throw up every time he cam in from outside and his provider gave him milk??!!:confused:

I would definitely do water, maybe juice..

There are several types of milk that doesn't have to be in the fridge. The WICC milk here is in shelf stable room temp boxes as well. Sometimes I have parents that send a case of the WICC milk in the boxes. The kids like it better than regular milk in the gallons. I hate it myself as far as taste is concerned.

Maybe check into this a little more. I can't claim sack lunches that I pack and send with a kid, but if I'm present when the child eats it I can claim it. (as on a daycare field trip) I have to notify the food program of where we are going so if they wanted to, they could find us and do a "visit" to make sure I'm still serving all my components of the meal. Even a note on my door as to where they can find me/us is acceptable here.

I usually try to be home for breakfast, lunch and dinner but would occasionally be away for a snack with the group. I would do juice or water and another claimable item. Milk was too much of a hassle for me.

I wasn't told anything about not claiming food when we go out. I told my rep that we went on a lot of outings during the summer and she didn't say anything. I called the program on Monday and asked about the policy of calling when we go out and she didn't say anything about not claiming the meals.

They are specially sealed, and they taste pretty good. I love the vanilla flavored one that I bought on accident once.

We HAVE to serve milk with meals here (not snacks though) I DO NOT EVER serve juice, so here it is milk or water. I feel safer knowing that the milk won't spoil if it gets warm, even in the cooler.

I can also claim food that was served out, even restaurant meals can be claimed as long as they meet the requirements.

I am taking the kids on a field trip next Friday (first full day home) and I can claim the meal, even though it will be take out, as long as they all drink milk and I make sure my components are met.

Single serve milk is packaged in individual aseptic containers and will keep at room temperature, unopened, up to seven months or until the date code. This extended sh elf life is possible due to ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurization. UHT pasteurization and special aseptic packaging keep single serve products fresh and safe without refrigeration. Once opened, th e product must be refrigerated and can be expected to remain fresh up to seven days.

Horizon Organic was the first organic dairy brand sold nationwide. We believe in the organic difference. Always have, always will. Explore our organic milk and organic dairy offerings, recipes and more.

It doesn't taste any different than regular milk. I keep a few cases on hand, as I use them pack all 4 of my kids lunches, plus daycare lunches out.

I just called my food program. Yes, I can claim the meals AS LONG as it meets all of the components.

I will be looking for that milk today. I think I've seen it at Costco. Sam's had it but only in chocolate.

I asked my food program lady yesterday about what was required for outings. She specifically said ALL components MUST be present in order to claim the meal, and that includes milk.

I do a thermos for when we do picnics. It works just fine. They do bubbles/chalk after they eat lunch.

Funny story...I worked at a center and they bought milk in gallon jugs and we poured it in front of the kids or the older children poured it themselves. They seemed to go through it fast. Well the center found out that it was cheaper to buy the milk in boxes and it lasted longer.
The boxed milk that they bought had a picture of a cow on it (the jugs did not). When the kids tried the new boxed milk none of them liked it and many would not drink it and few days after they started having to drink the milk, a few of the younger preschoolers declared that
                            "I won't drink milk from a cow" and wouldn't drink it ::

I've tasted it and think it's so gross!

I don't know if you have a Meijer, but I think they have it. I know for sure they have the other milks like soy, rice and almond.
