Sunburn

Summer is here and lately we are at the park for about 1.5-2 hours at time. I do require that all kids wear sunblock that was provided by the parents.

Despite the sunblock application, several of the kids are still getting a slight burn. I did make the suggestion to the parents that if their child burn easily, to provide a light weight sleeve t-shirt. MOst of the parents said they did not want to provide a long shirt for their child, because their child would be too hot.

My response was do you want a child that gets too hot and sweaty or do you want a child that may get sunburn?? Of course I got no response.

I have never had a child get a sunburn before and I am worried what the parents are going to say when they pick up to see that their child has a light burn.

how do you all deal with this type of stuff???

Make parents supply large sunhats, apply sunscreen again while outside, reduce the amount of time outside. 3 good options.

I'd put on more sunscreen, have those kids wear a hat, and possibly a rash gaurd. (can't remember what they are called though)

I have one kid who wears them all the time. Even though we don't go outside often. THESE are the ones he has. He has about six of them. Even in pink.

Most of my kids are very dark, but I have a new one that is blonde, fair, and blue eyes. I was worrying about him too. He won't start til the end of summer though. So, this is a good thread for me.

As someone with sensitive skin that burns at the drop of a hat I highly recommend reapplying and asking parents for a sunblock or well balanced sunscreen/sunblock. Also make sure you are applying enough, I saw a study recently that said people generally only apply 20-50% of what's actually recommended (not that you aren't but it's a suggestion that came to mind)

Hats and long shirts are a great option, also those long (or 3/4) sleeve swimsuit tops, but if your parents won't provide them then your best option is to apply sunscreen at least 45 mins prior and reapply once out. I reapply my own every 45 mins or so.

I burn if I even look out the window... Even would while driving long distances with my arm on the door.

I use SUNBLOCK only, not sunscreen.

I use a good SPF RATING.

I apply an HOUR before getting into the sun.

I reapply every 1.5 hours if we stay outside that long.

I've found that SOME brands work better than others so I supply sunblock and its the brand I know works.

I've NEVER had a kid in care or my own get a sunburn and in MS that's huge .

When I was a teenager certain sunscreens actually MADE me get sunburned. My doc described it as a reaction between my skin, the sun, and the sunscreen. So we tried a few brands before I found one that worked.

I sometimes have a little girl who is albino. So it is very serious to protect her from the sun. Her Mother applies sunscreen before she even drops off, and I reapply 45ish minutes before going outside. She wears a large hat and sunglasses. Reapply often. So far, so good.
