I'm thinking the reason why I maybe don't have as many problems with the allergy issue is because of the weather etc here most everyone has allergies and most kids here who have allergies are on year round meds and that prevents the issues.

My daughter and I are both on year round allergy meds. My son isn't though.

I have two dck on allergy meds.

None of mine is on allergy meds. As a matter of fact one of the dcms just think it's dcbs allergies because the "dad has really bad allergies". That's her go to excuse.

He has been in my care 16 months and his nose has been running every since the first day he started:confused: Not to mention that he has been a heavy drooler since the first day he started.

Wow I think I'd have to ask mom to get a referral to an allergist. My experience with them in small ones, say under age three, is that it majorly contributes to ear infections because there is so much drainage that can't drain down the Eustachian tubes etc and cause a back up.

My daughter had a terrible time with this and even despite allergy meds starting at age six months, she still had multiple ear infections, and went through three years of ear tubes and a subsequent tonsil and adenoid surgery.

She still has hearing loss because of it.

I live between farm and major city....SF....

so everyone here has massive allergies all the time. I never had them until I moved here, same with my kids.

That I know of, only one out of 14 actually have allergy medication that they take daily.

the rest, well they just have SNOT.........all the time...

Lol I don't deal with snot. If it seems to be allergy I give mom a handy little informational sheet and send them off to the doctor. Usually they come back with a great OTC option that's year round and the snot goes bye bye.

I may go through one box of Kleenex every three months and usually I just get tired of looking at that one box and out it up in the closet

Generally about 7 to 10 days if its still clear (green wouldn't signify allergies usually but something secondary)..

I recommend either they call a doc or take them in and get a recommendation for allergy meds. The great thing about the longer term ones is that USUALLY they don't have a lot of side effects and they are usually once a day.

I need to also mention don't get the wrong idea. Not every condition needs a medication or a "fix" but after 10 years of my daughter, and quite a bit of denial related to certain things, I came to realize that meds aren't always bad...

I'm the type that do NOT take my kids to the doc with a sniffle etc. I wait 7 to 10 days to see if its viral and if they aren't better, we try other options.

But there's just no need to live in snot yanno!

And the kids don't like it any more than we do

Oh sorry, yanno is slang for "you know" sorry I'm a redneck.

If all of them have snotty noses for more than two weeks, its likely allergies and is easily treatable

I heard some doctor/scientist? on t.v. one time that seemed to make a lot of sense. He said it was mostly a person's immune system. He said that in high school he was the lab partner to a kid who was constantly hacking and snotting but he never got sick. He said if anybody was likely to catch something that he would be the logical one to get it. He chalks it up to his immune system.

Since then whenever anything seems to be starting at my house, I give the children a full glass of orange juice every morning for breakfast and any other Vitamin C foods I can think of during the day. I figure it couldn't hurt. I also recommend that parents give their children a daily vitamin everyday and eat healthy foods.

Then I started to notice that one child I had, had a mom who is into all foods healthy yet her child and only her child would get a runny nose a LOT. Not clear so it didn't seem to be allergies. Her brother wasn't like that. I wondered if it was her immune system. It wasn't anything the mom did or didn't do because she was VERY health conscious.

I don't exclude for a cold unless the nose runs are continuous and hard to manage or if they have a fever of 100 degrees or higher. Otherwise I just let it run it's course.

I personally don't have an issue with colds sticking around for a long time or colds on a frequent basis but maybe that could be because of demographics? In CA we have nice weather all year long pretty much except for a few weeks out of the year so maybe we just have it going around less?

Everything I do in my DC to get rid of and prevent colds (and other illnesses) from going around is the same as what OP listed in the things she did so not sure what else to suggest :confused:.

I kind of think the same thing as I'm in South Florida. BUT, when we do get it going around it seems to be when the temperature 'changes'. As long as it stays relatively the same temperature it seems to be okay.

I think he was. As a kid, I always had a lot of ear problems and our ENT told me, at that time, that is was good to 'be a little sick' sometimes because it builds up immunities. Now I rarely ever get what is going around and if I do it is a very mild case of it. (knock on wood)

When people are surprised that I don't get what is going around I always say it is because I'm old and I've built up immunities I guess.

We had the WORST run of colds, viruses, and other ickyness until we ripped out the carpeting. Now besides my assistant getting shingles we haven't had a sick day since feb!!
