You Know It's Bound To Happen............

So we all know we can't exclude for every little cold that a child has.

My issue is that I will have a child come with a cold (of course parents say its allergies) but not bad enough to exclude. Of course, now everyone else is going to get sick. Within a few days, I start seeing all of the other kids one by one get the same cold. It does not matter how many times I clean, bleach, open windows, clean carpets, it is bound to go around the entire daycare.

THEN it just seems to stay here for a few weeks. Snot every where, kids coughing left and right....

I am curious to know what do you guys do in this type of situation. Is there some trick that I don't know about that I could be doing to help stop this?????

Thanks so much for your help.......

Ughhhh, I have the same thing going on here! The 9 mo. old that I have is coughing and has a runny nose. His parents said that he has asthma and has a nebulizer (sp?) at home and that's why he's coughing. Well he has been coughing for a little over a week now and now all the kids have runny noses, not to mention I got the runny nose last weekend and still have it. Something tells me this child is not coughing due to his asthma, but the symptoms are just like a cold. I haven't excluded him yet because I don't exclude for colds, but I'm with you..When is it going to stop? Maybe we should request a Dr. note, but at the same time I don't take my kids in for a cold. I'm interested in seeing what other people say!

I think that we have the same kid from the same family... I have asthma, Never in my life did it cause me a runny green nose or fever....

I am now also getting the teething excuse...BTW does teething really cause a low grade fever or is this BS?????

I cringe every time I see a child with snot dripping. Some I can TELL it's just allergies and some I can TELL it is a cold. I don't exclude unless it is a constant drip, constant coughing, or if they're unable to participate (one of mine is like a limp rag doll anytime she gets a cold and can barely move). I DO cringe and then up my own vitamin intake, handwashing routine (my poor hands!), and the amount of sleep I'm sleeping so that I don't get it.

In some children, teething can cause a fever but many say that teething does not cause a fever. So, I guess it's an opinion thing.

My experience in this..is yes.... And no. And it depends.

My daughter ran a fever with every tooth. Sometimes she got a little diarrhea maybe from the fever who knows. It was so predictable.

My son, has only ran TWO fevers in his entire almost five years. He never had another symptom with them, and was never sickly and we never found out why.

He had atypical pneumonia at almost two. Never coughed, never had a fever and was his first if only TWO real doctor appointments other than well checks and shots in his 5 years.

My daughter in the other hand put us through illness he@@!!!! For the first five years of life. She had dozens of unexplained rashes, some with fever, some with none. Rosella, rotavirus, three sets of tubes, asthma, reflux, oh. My. Gosh. I have no idea how any of us survived it but we did.

In my daycare experience I've had several long term kiddos that I felt I knew quite well and probably knew their teething better than their parents.

Most of them if not all of them had low grade fevers with teething, some teeth more than others.

99.999%!got low to high grade fevers with shots for two to three days as well.

As far as illness is concerned, I've only had one that went through the daycare and that one affected my two kids as well.

I don't exclude for colds or croup or anything like that. I don't use bleach at ALL. I ONLY use ODOBAN and I even use it to mop with.

Mine and my daughters asthma won't allow bleach and I refuse to buy it.

That being said, with our asthma, if we get a flare up that makes us really congested, we will both run a VERY LOW GRADE temp, under 100.5.

yeah...My hands have scabs and are soooooo dry from over hand washing and hand sanitizer.

I don't usually have kids in the teething age group, I do have one now and it seems like she has been teething since the day she started 2 months ago....

I have the same thing with my families. I accept mild colds but if one is sick, we all get sick. It is frustrating and I feel like I spend most of my time wiping noses. I should have shares in Kleenex!

I am now also getting the teething excuse...BTW does teething really cause a low grade fever or is this BS?????[/QUOTE]

I think that all kids react differently to teething but I have in my handbook that I will exclude for fevers and diarrhea. If the parents suspect that it is due to teething, I must have a doctor's note stating that. I had a parent last week try to tell me that her son's diarrhea was b/c of his teeth. I sent him home anyways and 2 days later we were all sick with a stomach thing. So ???

I'm thinking the reason why I maybe don't have as many problems with the allergy issue is because of the weather etc here most everyone has allergies and most kids here who have allergies are on year round meds and that prevents the issues.

My daughter and I are both on year round allergy meds. My son isn't though.

I have two dck on allergy meds.

I don't exclude for a cold unless the nose runs are continuous and hard to manage or if they have a fever of 100 degrees or higher. Otherwise I just let it run it's course.

I personally don't have an issue with colds sticking around for a long time or colds on a frequent basis but maybe that could be because of demographics? In CA we have nice weather all year long pretty much except for a few weeks out of the year so maybe we just have it going around less?

Everything I do in my DC to get rid of and prevent colds (and other illnesses) from going around is the same as what OP listed in the things she did so not sure what else to suggest .
