What's So Great About Your State?

I was born and raised in Oregon, my husband is the same. We will never live anywhere else, we absolutely love it here! We live in Portland, which is the largest city. He grew up in the city, but I grew up on the beach where my parents still live. Everything is GORGEOUS here! The rivers, lakes, mountains and the BEACH!! I would never live at the beach again because small town life isn't for me, but I absolutely love going to visit. We were just there over the weekend and the sun was shinning! We also have 4 seasons, but our winter is mostly rain, very little snow falls in the valley. If you live in eastern or central Oregon though it's a different story! Our summers aren't too extreme, usually 80's, sometimes cooler, but we usually have a week or 2 with hot days in the 100s. IMO schools have problems everywhere! Both my parents are retired teachers, my brother is a teacher and my sister in law is a school counselor. I don't think our schools are horrible, but with all things, there is definitely room for improvement! I'm a newer provider, only been licensed for 8 months, but there are so many resources available so that's been really helpful. Anyways...I couldn't imagine living anywhere but here, every time my husband and I go camping we always talk about how lucky we are to live in such a gorgeous state!
I'm trying to talk him into transferring to one of the state parks closer to PDX but we'll see. DH threatens to transfer to the coast, but that's not gonna happen because the parks that he's interested in transferring too are in the northern part and the north coast is to small and rainy for me!
I grew up in back and forth between Central Oregon and the Willamette Valley and DH grew up here in the Willamette Valley. We lived in Southern Oregon for 5 years (Medford/Ashland area) and loved it, but recently DH accepted a transfer and we relocated back up here to be near family (I regret this now :
If I could move your way I totally would!- Flag

We're just south of you. I lovethis PDX way more than where we are now but its too far for DH to drive everyday for workI'm trying to talk him into transferring to one of the state parks closer to PDX but we'll see. And we have a lot more tornadoes than la or Alabama they just aren't publicized.- Flag

Just on the outskirts of Salem. We looked into Silverton because DH's job is right there but we just couldn't find anything that fit our needs house wise. We don't plan to be here in 3-4 years so I just have to deal with it a bit longer but I'm really not a fan of this town. The state yes but there are much better towns!
Mississippi would be at the top if our idiotic powers that be would actually call a state of disaster. They just recently started doing it the last five years or so. It wasn't as publicized but ms was just as damaged as la was during all those hurricanes.

I bet!! Tornados freak me out more than the other storms, a least with the hurricanes you have an idea of when they are coming and what to expect! Thankfully I don't have to worry about them! Though we did have one like 2 years ago in a small town like 20 mins from where I am. It was BIG news, no one got hurt and just a bit of damage but for us that's an anomaly!- Flag

. But unfortunately we get a lot of all of it, even ice storms, a few months ago we had a record hail storm that missed my house thank goodness but destroyed entire neighborhoods, even busted glass out of businesses and totaled thousands of cars in the area.
Nope, no disaster called.
Remind me one day to tell you the tornado of 2002 and the cows mooing story- Flag

Oops, yes I am in northern Minnesota.
Our lakes are crystal clear! You can see the bottom of most the lakes here....
I have a ton of photos I can show you....I'll find them and make an album in my profile and link you to them when I gather them all.
Oh, and running a daycare in MN is easy too! Our regs are not very restrictive and they are easy to follow.- Flag

I live in NY and will concur. We also get a great 4 seasons every year, it is B E A U T I F U L (I live near the finger lakes, right in the heart of wine country) BUT the taxes and regulations are ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend anyone move here, simply because of the taxes.- Flag

Here is my scenery from MN. Most the pictures are ones I have taken myself and all the locations are within 90 minutes of my home.
As far as property taxes go, we live on 40 acres within 5 miles of town. My yearly property taxes are less than $1500.
I have two city lots in town for my daycare house. It is classified as "None homesteaded" because no one actually lives there. The property taxes on my daycare home are less than $800 per year.- Flag

I heart Oregon, BUT I don't currently care for the town were are in now ::
We're outdoorsy people and there is a lot to do here. We hike, camp, kayak, fish...
The state really varies in climate depending on where you go. We have lots of trees and mountain areas, plus the beach!
Recently on a trip back east I had someone from Pittsburgh ask me if we had running water and electricity? Also if we ate things like chips and regular cereal or if the stores just sold granola and trail mix?:
:
(can you tell we like the mountains?)
DH is a park ranger and we debate moving to other states someday, I'm totally adding MN to our list!- Flag

Our weather is fairly mild with few major winter or summer storms. The Finger Lakes are close by and the wineries and entire area landscape are absolutely amazing in the Fall.
If it weren't for the taxes and regulations as someone else said, it is a wonderful place to live- Flag

This thread has really helped me because in about 2 years we will be moving somewhere in the country for 7 years during my hubbys md/phd training. We will just have to see where he gets accepted but a few of the cities available in states that you all mentioned are
Minnesota: Rochester, Minneapolis
Oregon: Portland
We live in Kansas. Probably not for people who weren't born and raised here. We have 4 seasons. Hot summers, cold winters, shorter spring an Fall depending on the year. Pretty windy. Although I find fields of wheat blowing in the wind beautiful and find great comfort in the great plains...there is not a whole lot to look at.- Flag
