Observe. Photograph. Take notes on what they're doing. (For documentation of learning and for emergent curriculum development.) Provide support and supplies for their projects. Assist with conflict resolution. Read aloud. Work on my own projects in their midst (crochet, making materials for their play, paperwork).
Free play is a fantastic opportunity to document, observe and assess where each child is at developmentally.
I am available the children during free play but try not to get involved as the whole point of free play for me is to have the kids play without adult interaction and direction.
Free play is also a great time to photograph the kids doing what they do best in their natural environment.
It is also a good time to prepare the next activity, gathering, prepping and setting out supplies etc.

I always try to engage the children and guide them during the first few minutes of free choice. For example, if everyone is running around like crazy and completely ignoring the house center, I'll sit down and say "Oh I'm so thirsty, I wonder who will bring me some tea?" they jump right in! Because I use the Reggio Emilia approach, I am often taking pictures and recording video/conversations for the documentation board once I get everyone actively playing. Beyond that... I try to spot clean, prep food, sneak in a snack and focus on professional development time (aka daycare.com forum :-D)

I do that AND I get on here and/or e-mail the parents the daily report for the day. I enjoy getting on here the most. :: I try to set aside the same time each day during free play to do that after I ensure that all children are engaged in activities. I'll pop up here and there to assist them in using their words or play as well, but I try to let them do their own thing as me leading their play isn't going to do as much for their brain development as them thinking of ideas and enacting them on their own. We have free play for about 2 hours total each day inside. We have free play for about 2 hours total each day outside. When we're outside, I just watch them and listen to them when they have stories to tell me.

If they are playing kitchen, I "eat". Playing beauty salon.....I get my hair and nails."done". Playing cars.....I'm the traffic light. You get the picture.....I play!!
Clean up after breakfast, take pictures & document, I offer creative art activities around 9:00 during free play that I am helping the kids with, straighten up things like my desk, break up disagreements and/or help kids problem solve disagreements and Begin to fill out the "What I did today" sheet. That's about it.
