New DCB..... Only Child

Hello again!

I have a new DCB, 18 months old... he just started today... luckily he is the only child until Thursday. I am kind of at a loss with him. He walks about with a nuk in his mouth non stop... and mom brought both a bottle and a cup.. as sometimes he will refuse cup apparently. He is also dragging two blankets behind him. When we met he only had his small tag blanket. Anyways, he's nonverbal and literally all he does is lay on the floor. What the heck?!

I don't allow pacis/nuks after 12 months. I don't allow bottles after 12 months - if he refuses a cup, he doesn't drink. I don't allow kids to have a blanket all day - a parent can bring ONE blanket in the beginning of enrollment and that blanket STAYS HERE, in their cubby until nap time - and goes right back in their cubby after nap time.

This kid is obviously treated like a baby at home - so he acts like a baby. Treat him like an 18 month old and he will adjust quickly. Slowly encourage him to play with age appropriate toys, etc - take away the nuk, bottle and blanket.

I agree. Slowly start to treat him like an 18-month old and he'll start acting like one. I'd be careful not to take away the pacifier and blankets and bottles all at once--he's still adjusting to coming to your daycare, and without those security items he could really have a hard time.

I would start to remove those items as soon as he was adjusted to coming to your house.

I would pick up whatever item he drops, place it in the cubby and not offer it again. I wouldn't leave the bottle in sight, and only offer the binky as needed for naps.

When a DCK comes with a blanket, I take it right to the napping room & let them know they can have it when they take a nap. They fuse the first couple of days over it, but soon forget they have it. I have NO nuk kids thank gosh!

I don't allow any of those items. :: I do still have children who use a pacifier at home, who are way too old to do so, and have personal blankets but I don't allow outside items in here and none of those items are necessary. We only use open cups.

If the parent doesn't immediately grab the item that isn't permitted, I will hand it to them and say, "Let's trade. I'll take DCB, and you take the blanket. "
