    I'm SOOOO Mad!!! (vent)

    DCB is scheduled M,T,W,F.

DCD asked me to watch DCB on Thursday so he could golf. I took DCB in at 1230pm. Put him right down for a nap.

After nap he was really irritable. I took his temp and notified DCM that DCB had a temp of 101.8 and that he would need to go home and couldn't attend Friday.

DCD picked the child up within about 40 minutes of me calling. My policy is to pick up within 30 minutes.

DCM texts me at 620am on Friday telling me that DCB isn't coming to daycare. (No kidding was more my thought. He can't!)

DCD had to drop by Friday after work to pick up DCB's shoes that were left here and he said that they took DCB to the doctor but they said it was a virus and sent them home. No medicine, no nothing.

    {A different family notified me last night that their child woke up Saturday morning with a fever of 103 and went to urgent care. He was diagnosed with strep. He got a rash on his arms from the fever, has been on meds and is back to his happy, content self today.}

So I tell DCD at drop off this morning that another child presented the same symptoms the very next day and was diagnosed with strep and asked him if they did a strep test on DCB. He said they didn't but his niece had gotten strep the next day and that the doctor said it might be HFM!?

Are you kidding me?! How does a family take their child to the doctor, get a diagnosis and not tell their daycare provider??? Especially about HFM??? I'm so angry and irritated with the parents behaviors, I'm really contemplating terming!

It's as if they want me to keep their child healthy and free of disease to the best of my ability but they don't care about providing me with information that might keep another child healthy!! So irritating!

Can you begin requiring a Doctor's note for readmittance into care?

I require a written doctor's diagnosis if the parent is wanting the child to be readmitted into daycare the same day or following day but because this all occurred over a weekend, I don't.

I had a former DCM fight me on a doctor's note saying the doctor said DCG could return to daycare while I disagreed. My house, my rules. I'm not going to admit a child just because a doctor says so.

FWIW~ I'd be a little mad if I were you too but, in the parent's defense, HFM IS viral, which he did say the doctor said it is probably viral.

Also the Doctor only said it "might" be HFM and since there really is no way of knowing or anything a parent can do to be sure it is or isn't, I can see how this miscommunication easily happened.

If they (the family) has never dealt with HFM before, they probably have no clue that it was something they should have mentioned.

I'd NEVER heard of HFM until probably 10 years into doing child care.

Did the dr say that the niece has HFM or your DCB?

Parents don't always think beyond their child.

Strept is going around the kids' school. 4 kids in my grandson's class had documented cases. I took my grandson in when he started complaining of a sore throat. As a precaution, the dr ran a strept test and it came back clear, but he did have an ear infection.

It MIGHT be HFM????. So they didn't get a diagnosis but they got a guess? One of the kids could have been misdiagnosed btw, like either they both have strep or they both have HFM. How old are the kids? The older ones may not show the "spots" from HFM but younger ones will. I really hope that it's not HFM because it is EXTREMELY contagious. The first symptoms of it won't show up for about 5 days but they are contagious before any signs of it. If it is HFM you may see more kids that were at daycare in the last 5 days before the signs showed up come down with it.

DCD did not tell you that their child "might" have HFM because they probably won't want to miss any more DC than they have to. Their child (and the other one too if they have HFM) may have to stay out of DC for 5 days. I'd disinfect EVERYTHING with bleach/water solution now just to be sure.

I don't have experience with strep so I'm not sure what the process for that would be or what the exclusion period is but if you disinfect everything for HFM then I'm sure you'll be covered for the strep just in case that is what it is.

My son and nephew got HFM once when we took my son to a child's play place. Exactly five days later he and my nephew had a fever and some spots. I immediately quarantined both of my kids upstairs (my DH stayed home upstairs with them) and told my SIL to do the same with my nephew. She STILL went next door briefly to my BIL's house (her brother, they live next door) for just a few minutes after I told her not to have her son come into contact with any kids and my other nephew signs too 5 days later from just those few minutes. That nephew then went to play with his cousin (no signs yet) and exactly five days after that his cousin showed signs it too. After leaving my home and after leaving my BIL's house the day I called her to come and pick up my nephew to take him home she then immediately sent her son to his dads house so she wouldn't have to miss work (they are not together) because her son's dad was not working at the time but he has another son in the home and he got it too . None of my other DCK's got it. Be very careful with HFM. Really hope that's not what it is.

Yep, DCD said it "might" be HFM. My guess is it WAS HFM. They just didn't want to tell me that. That's another reason why I'm so perturbed!

They still should have said something. My daughter possibly has scarlet fever (labs aren't back yet) but I made sure to tell our daycare provider anyway and babygirl is staying home. You can give common courtesy even if you don't have an official diagnosis.

                  What does HFM stand for?

Yikes, that would be crazy for a dr to say it "might" be HFM with how contagious that stuff is!! I would be very upset, too.

I might print up a sheet that gives information about HFM, and hand that to the parents?

Hand, foot and mouth. While annoying, it is not really a dangerous disease. I don't even exclude for it.

My ODS had it.....along with half of his daycare center when he was 2. They didn't eclude for it because by the time they present symtoms, they have already been contagious for several days. Not saying nobody should exclude for it (I would). Just thoght I'd share that

I exclude until all sores are healed. Usually 2 days. And yes, any indications are gone now. The irritating part is that I do my best to ensure their child remains healthy yet they couldn't tell me on Friday that others may have been exposed to HFM?! That's the part that burns my buttons!
