Anyone Else Have A No-Meds Policy?

I mean, not giving them?

I'm specifically talking about amoxicillian, which is to be given 3 times a day. Parents seem to think that means there MUST be a dose at lunch time, but my docs always said morning, early evening, and bedtime is ok.

The level of documentation here for giving stuff is so over-the-top, and then I worry if there is a reaction.

Opinions?

I should add, that if it were a life-saving med, like an Epipen, inhaler, etc, I'd do that, with proper instructions and documentation.

There is no reason a parent can't dose in the a.m. before drop off, again in the afternoon at pick up and then again at bedtime.

I do NOT give meds of ANY KIND for ANY reasons. EVER. (Except the obvious like an Epi-pen etc)

I plan to do prescription meds only. I was the only med-trained person at my old center, and it was so ridiculous with all the OTC stuff that parents would insist the kid needed. I really don't like giving meds at all, but in this overly pharmaceutical society we live in, it seems a must.

I do not do meds at all and haven't in the 5 years I have been doing home daycare. In my state, you have to have medication administration training in order to administer medication and I didn't want to deal with it! I can use OTC topical creams only (diaper cream, sunscreen, antibiotic ointment), but it has never been a problem for any of my families. If a child needed life saving medication due to severe allergies or asthma, I would apply for a waiver to be able to administer those medications. It is nice not to have to deal with the parents who want you to medicate their child for every little thing because I legally can not administer anything!

I don't do any OTC and am very reluctant for anything else that isn't life saving - frankly the liability issues are just to much and I am not comfortable with it.


I do apply diaper cream and sunscreen with approved forms supplied and parents sending in products they want used.

I've been thinking of changing my policies to no meds given. The main reason for this is breathing treatments. They are so time-consuming. I recently found out that one boy was getting ALL of his treatments here. 3 times a day, and his mom had me doing all three. How nice for her! I thought he was taking them before coming here, and again in the evening before bed. I have six preschoolers here.....at home she has one preschooler and a 10 yr old, yet she was fine with me spending all that time doing the treatments.

never ever, unless the risk of them NOT having it is worth the risk of giving it (epi pen, inhaler, nebulizer treatments and insulin)

Just changed my policy to no meds also. I was tired of parents thinking I could just give little Johny some tylenol for every single symptom that may develop.

Also I was giving 4 different kids nebs 3 times/day. That was just too much - too time consuming! Especially annoying when the parents weren't giving them at home, or they would just show up with a neb and tell me that their child sounded a little congested today, can you give a neb? No doctor's note, no diagnosed condition, just giving nebs for every sniffle and cough...

I feel the liability is too great to have to worry about it.

We also have new regulations being proposed in our state - requiring more documentation, storage regulations, doctor's notes, noting expiration dates, etc.

No meds here either unless for serious reasons such as an epi-pen for an allergic reaction. So far that has been the only exception I have ever made.

3 times a day I won't. There's no reason a parent cant give them right when they get up, right when they get picked up from daycare and right before bed.
